I forgot this existed during the rap rock craze of the late 90s:

Features Dave Grohl on drums and Tommy Stinson on bass (who is in the video). Stinson had been around forever at this point and I assume was in his 40s, but was 31 when he did this. He was so damn young in the Replacements.

Anyway, this isn't good and the late 90s weren't a great time for hip hop. It's a downgrade from the alright original but it's very much a product of its time.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Technically I guess it's not a great time if it's the GREATEST time.

I'm kidding. We need to nuke the late 90s from orbit, just to be sure.

Yeah, I got into a big debate with my younger coworker who thinks 98 is the best year for music. I threw out 94, because 94 is the greatest year, culturally, in existence. So now we are going back and forth about it and I had to do a deep dive on the late 90s. The guy wasn't even familiar with the swing revival. He just loves Miseducation so he thinks that's all 98.

Woodstock 94 > Woodstock 99. Case closed.

Bill Clinton reminds me of Scott Schwartz, the actor who played the spoiled rich kid in The Toy (1982, with Richard Pryor) and also played Flick in A Christmas Story (nothing against Scott Schwartz). Especially as an adult. Tell me I’m wrong.

That dude worked at a hollywood collectibles store next to the movie theater I worked at in high school. He did porn around this time too. His dad was weird.

Given that The Toy used a joke calling him Master Bates, he was fated to porn.

I used to work with a guy whose last name was Bates. I always respectfully referred to him as Master Bates.

Even saying Mr. Bates gets the joke across.

Yeah I wanted there to be no mistaking it while still being able to claim it was just me showing respect should anyone raise an eyebrow.
