Maybe it's time for a revival of romantic-period classical music and styles.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 1:24pmMaybe in the country scene?Kory wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 1:08pmWe haven't brought rockabilly back in a while...Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑18 Mar 2024, 4:52pmAn absolutely ancient but prescient Onion story: https://www.theonion.com/u-s-dept-of-re ... 1819564513

It's funny, I'll occasionally get a student who rejects the idea that musical developments or trends or styles have any socio-political context or meaning (you know, rejecting the entire premise of the class). In other words, rock n roll just happened. So did punk and hip hop. Just occured out of nowhere. So I'll ask whether they think opera or bebop could dominate the charts next year. No, of course not. Why not, if it's all random? It just wouldn't. I have no idea how many figure it out after that.Kory wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 3:55pmMaybe it's time for a revival of romantic-period classical music and styles.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 1:24pmMaybe in the country scene?Kory wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 1:08pmWe haven't brought rockabilly back in a while...Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑18 Mar 2024, 4:52pmAn absolutely ancient but prescient Onion story: https://www.theonion.com/u-s-dept-of-re ... 1819564513

You should force those students to write a paper defending their argument. CHANCES ARE, they have no idea what they even believe.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 4:06pmIt's funny, I'll occasionally get a student who rejects the idea that musical developments or trends or styles have any socio-political context or meaning (you know, rejecting the entire premise of the class). The power to assign random papers is much overestimated. But your larger point is correct. More generally yet, while students are decent at making arguments or identifying them in others, they aren't they adept at going the next step or two to consider the implication of an argument if you continue to follow the logic. They treat arguments as an end point rather than the basis for the real work of analysis—what happens if you apply it elsewhere? Mind you, I don't think at their age I was especially blessed with that skill or inclination. Better than them, but not overly.Kory wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 5:16pmYou should force those students to write a paper defending their argument. I love how Calvin is alternately either a genius or an idiot, depending on what the punchline requires.revbob wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 5:29pmKory wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 3:55pmMaybe it's time for a revival of romantic-period classical music and styles.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 1:24pmMaybe in the country scene?Kory wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 1:08pmWe haven't brought rockabilly back in a while...Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑18 Mar 2024, 4:52pmAn absolutely ancient but prescient Onion story: https://www.theonion.com/u-s-dept-of-re ... 1819564513

Calvin established himself as an Xer who was contemptuous of Boomers then and there.

We've done everything possible awful along the way.
