It feels very short, but that may be because Mike said they had like 40+ songs so I was expecting something of the length of Wolves or something. It is even more confessional, and pretty rockin'. I liked it.
I just re-listened to First Ditch Effort and enjoyed it more than I remembered, so maybe I'll give Single Album a try again soon. My recollection is My Bro Cancer-Vive Cancer was the standout track for me last time due to its very wry bleakness.

Just for kicks, acts I've seen since last participating in this:

-Jerry Lee Lewis
-Willie Nelson
-Wanda Jackson
-Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
-X
-Ex Hex
-Mitski
-Lucinda Williams
-James McMurtry
-Harry Dean Stanton
-Real Sleater-Kinney (this post-Janet stuff is *terrible*)
-Sturgill Simpson
-Mike Watt

Good bucket list items to scratch off. Hoping to see Bob Dylan again soon when things reopen, and to see X play their new album, but beyond that there really isn't anything I'm too hot on. Turns out I'm more of a repertory screening jerk now because I saw everybody I wanted to see.
I can't remember if we had this convo. When/where did you see Jerry Lee? I flew out to LA and saw him with tep a few years ago. Got very fucked up with him (tep, not jerry) afterwards.

Nice catches seeing Petty and Sleater-Kinney in its true form.

I saw Wanda Jackson play the Bangor Folk Festival in Maine back in college. She was in a lineup with the Skatalites and, I wanna say, Del McCoury. Weird lineup.

You gonna check out Bob's streaming thing in a few weeks?

I saw Jerry Lee twice in Milwaukee mid-90's. 1st time he was in in fine form, 2nd time he was pissed off and/or drunk and played 2 songs before walking off stage.

He's the only live act I've ever seen who I could confidently say I believe murdered at least one person in his lifetime.

The way I saw Jerry Lee was really cool actually: he was playing at a casino in a rural area east of Sacramento. We made a weekend of it. I thought it was gonna suck and be obligatory because that's how the casino racket works, but actually he was in a field outside of the casino. We sat on bleachers and there was nothing but farmland visible, like in olden times. Really good set in the perfect environment. Thankful we saw him before the stroke/covid. Had to be one of his five or so last gigs.

Petty was incredible not just because my mom's boyfriend bought the "please like me" tickets, but because it was the end of the tour, had great production and a dream setlist. And the Webb sisters on harmonies, which ruled. Still mad he died like 8 days later; I got into his DJ show a little while after that and wish like hell there were still new episodes. He seems so incredibly not-dead on that, and he's funny as hell. Really changed my perspective on the guy.

Sleater-Kinney was perfect too, which was entirely Janet's doing. Their pivot in the last few years has been bizarre. Everything good thy ever did was good because they were a power trio with Corin basically on lead vocals and semi-bass with Carrie vocally dancing around her once in awhile on the chorus. Now they've got an image consultant and really corporate production values and Carrie seems to have taken over as lead singer, with Corin kind of milling about in the background. Blows my mind because Carrie can't really sing and that fake Patti Smith/staccato thing does nothing for me or anyone I know. It's like they threw away the whole thing they built in favor of being Carrie Brownstein's Celebrity Band.

I'll check out the Bob stream if it's free but I don't like virtual concerts, and can't watch them at all when there's no audience. I'm hoping he reschedules at the Bowl so I can get the nosebleed seats and just hang out with a bottle of wine.

Oh, and Wanda Jackson was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Stood about ten feet away from her at a bar in Tustin. Tons of teenagers there, really vibrant energy. Sucks that she retired. Hope she's doing alright.

And yeah, I'd bet on Jerry having killed somebody. Now he's fully mellowed out into "absent-minded grandfatherly southern aristocracy who's gonna live to 105 just to piss off his kids" mode, but you can still tell a little bit.

The 1st time he was really, really on. He was in his early 60's and he still had a lot of energy. Incredible stage presence. James Burton was on lead guitar, which was a huge plus for me. He conveyed a lot of tension, like you were just never sure whether he was going to tell a joke or flash a middle finger at the audience or whether he was going to barrel into a new song or kick over the piano bench and stalk off stage. The 2nd time I saw him, which was maybe a year later, you could tell right away that he was in a bad mood. He was barking at his band, scowling at the audience. Guy truly is one of a kind.

Does it count as a concert schedule if it's a book reading and talk? If it doesn't, then nothing, but if it does then Don Letts is just 10 minutes from my flat at the end of next month and I'm really looking forward to that. I don't know whether to be a geek and ask some questions or just safe in the knowledge that a few others will probably ask them anyway?

I did the virtual Crowded House concert 2 weeks ago. We did our best to experience it like a concert: dimmed the lights, put it up on the big screen, made sure the volume was up really loud. We even had a few "watered down" concert venue cocktails. I enjoyed the show, but obviously not nearly the same as being there in person. I have seen them live before and would in a heartbeat see them live if they came to Chicago/Milwaukee (or even Minneapolis).

How was Jerry Lee? *edit* I see your subsequent post

I've been dying to see Sturgill and had tickets to see him last year. Hoping to see him next time he rolls through.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

That's the tour with Flogging Molly and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes right? That's a serious catnip lineup for me, tho it's post baby so not likely to happen. Enjoy it!

This will be into the teens - don't know for sure. Yeah, they have only changed drummers once (I believe, over the years) and added the Horns of Dilemma section (which I think has been a benefit). They have never, over the years, disappointed me live. They don't come in with a setlist, so you never know what you'll hear. There's really no other band out there like them.
