Driving in the car, radio set to Ottawa's "alternative" station—the Boss controls the radio cos she's the driver—and "Island in the Sun" comes on. She turns it up. I tell her Weezer fans hate that song. She replies, "I don't care," and cranks it even louder and starts singing along.
I love it!!! Only because I wasn't in the car though.
I can do two things when in the car: generate a whoooole lot of snarky banter related to the radio; or go inside my head and think about dumb shit. A lot of pros and cons with either choice.
Yeah my snark has worn very thin with the wife. Others seem to like it though.

Prophets unappreciated in our time, but with a jerk spin on things.

I think my opinion is especially strong relative to most fans. What really bothers me is how much more popular it is than songs that are clearly better. Spotify has it at 400m listens vs. #2 Say It Ain't So at 260m listens. Then again, Beverly Hills is fourth at 140m listens. Though I don't hate Beverly Hills as much as most fans do.

Generally speaking, tho, IitS is their Train in Vain.

Although I love TIV, that comparison makes a lot of sense.

Within the context of the album, it is a very mild stylistic diversion. Hash Pipe too for that matter, but only because that one is the only song that has anything resembling some kind of fire or aggression.

I could take it or leave it, really. It's the popularity of a mediocre song relative to the legit great songs in their canon that really sinks it for me. And I know, I'm being hypocritical, because I've argued, "it's not the song's fault" before. But it is frustrating.

I get that. We all have those goofy annoyances that songs of an artist that we think are spectacular are generally ignored in favour of stuff that is merely good or okay, which results in a harsher view of that popular song. We're working a relative scale rather than an absolute one.

At this point, being a Weezer fan is arguing what bad Weezer songs aren't actually bad.

But Burnt Jamb being top 20 and Garage being #1 is a bit questionable.

I do enjoy immensely the death march nature of Weezer fandom, of just culling and culling to get to an acceptable ep. It really is like IMCT when we get on a roll in doing proctological analyses of Clash songs.

Also that dude loves Maladroit way too much. I never understood the weird appreciation for Green and Mala. Everything Will Be Alright, Red (w/bonus tracks), and White are their post-Pinkerton best albums. Even the best songs on Pacific Daydream are better than anything on Green/Mala.

People liked Maladroit because it seemed like it was slightly getting back on the right track after the boredom of the Green album. I suppose some people still have nostalgic feelings for the dawn of hope before Make Believe killed us all.

I'll just say that a best-of album—singles plus—would be fucking immense. They seem so well suited for a best-of that I can't believe it hasn't happened after all this time.
