I think they might still be popular in Japan. I know a lot of masters came out of there at least.

I have a handful of gold cds. The gold doesn't make a difference (japan is chalk full of cd snake oil, check out SHM and Blu Spec formats), but a lot of times they have unique, high quality masterings.

I read steve hoffman forums and you will get people swearing they hear the difference between the same mastered recording if it's on gold, blu Spec, etc. and it's like... Why don't you just venmo me some of your extra money you dumb motherfucker?

Per Wikipedia, they are less prone to disc rot than regular cds. That’s not how I remember them being marketed though.

It reminds me of the blind test done years ago where professional wine tasters failed to consistently distinguish a $500 bottle from a $20 bottle. Put a new hat on Malibu Stacy and it's better.

Hello,

Okay, I'm old -but I challenge any young person to post a current band that can deliver this level of performance. The crowd are n the same floor as the band yet remain a step back realizing they're not on the same level as the band - not wanting to interrupt the band. I would suggest current young people would be grabbing the mike trying to get their youtube or instagram moment (oops, old fart creeping out). Enjoy!
