Re: The Mighty Musical Observations Thread
In a 2004 interview, he called Enoch Powell “outrageously brave,” and again bemoaned the presence of immigrants in the UK. In 2007, he again said he supported Powell, and denied that Powell was racist.

Yeah especially for a man who has made millions off of the backs of old blues musicians.Marky Dread wrote: ↑22 Jul 2021, 4:18pmIn a 2004 interview, he called Enoch Powell “outrageously brave,” and again bemoaned the presence of immigrants in the UK. Wasn't there a recentish doc where Clapton said he was ashamed of his racist past and ascribed It, at least partly anyway, to the cocktail of drink and drugs he was ingesting daily. Not that it makes him any less a piece of shit or anything, but he has at least made an apology of sorts, genuine or no.

Yeah, that's the closest he's come, tho blaming drugs is pretty lame—they don't make you a racist, they only turn off the filter that tells you to keep your mouth shut about it. And if he's still defending Powell, he really hasn't apologized.Low Down Low wrote: ↑22 Jul 2021, 5:40pmWasn't there a recentish doc where Clapton said he was ashamed of his racist past and ascribed It, at least partly anyway, to the cocktail of drink and drugs he was ingesting daily. Didn't see the doc so not sure if he addressed Powell or not. But anyway, 40 years is just a tad too late to be finally seeing the light I would think. Don't see much by way of possible redemption in it.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑22 Jul 2021, 6:05pmYeah, that's the closest he's come, tho blaming drugs is pretty lame—they don't make you a racist, they only turn off the filter that tells you to keep your mouth shut about it. Exactly, the roots to his music are deeply seated in a culture he appears to disdain.revbob wrote: ↑22 Jul 2021, 5:16pmYeah especially for a man who has made millions off of the backs of old blues musicians.Marky Dread wrote: ↑22 Jul 2021, 4:18pmIn a 2004 interview, he called Enoch Powell “outrageously brave,” and again bemoaned the presence of immigrants in the UK. https://www.nme.com/news/music/grimes-t ... er-3001087A fan asked the singer, “Why did u even sign to a label”, to which Grimes responded: “Need to get out of the gate-keeping of indie music and I need $ for music videos etc haha contrary to popular belief my bf doesn’t fund my career.”
Yes, because everyone knows the great virtue of a major label is total artistic freedom.

Re: The Mighty Musical Observations Thread
I'm all for artists getting paid and whatnot, but I feel like we've rubberbanded in the extreme opposite direction of a lot of the 80s/90s anti-corporate ethos (which could be counterproductive to the point of shitting on bands/artists for trying to make an actual living) to this point where corporate control and conspicuous consumption are all, like, supreme virtues. Never question signing on the dotted line and doing whatever the mega-conglomerates want you to do! If you do you're just "gatekeeping" and being anti-artistic expression. As someone who came up with at least the idea that we should be working towards alternatives spaces, it's all pretty depressing.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Jul 2021, 12:48pmhttps://www.nme.com/news/music/grimes-t ... er-3001087

I'm sure Shaun Ryder's done more drugs than Clapton: he's never slurred out a defence of Oswald Moseley.

Was always pretty much down with Shaun Ryder until I came across an interview in the Grauniad recently in which he was keen to spell out his socialist credentials but felt the need to add he could never vote for that Corbyn fella cos he'd "have taken too much of my money off me."

A solid way to unmask a liberal posing as a leftist. In academia, whenever the topic of tackling systemic racism comes up, liberals are cool with hiring a couple scholars of colour, but the idea of actually ceding some power over discourse and curriculum sends them howling about "going too far." The pie shouldn't be recut, it should just be grown and the new guy can have some of that!recently in which he was keen to spell out his socialist credentials but felt the need to add he could never vote for that Corbyn fella cos he'd "have taken too much of my money off me."

I doubt very much that Shaun gives a flying fuck about politics one way or another. He's more interested in U.F.Os.Low Down Low wrote: ↑23 Jul 2021, 3:34pmWas always pretty much down with Shaun Ryder until I came across an interview in the Grauniad recently in which he was keen to spell out his socialist credentials but felt the need to add he could never vote for that Corbyn fella cos he'd "have taken too much of my money off me."
