Punk has always had a Randian type of problem. Randian philosophy emphasizes the primacy of the individual and selfish to an insane degree, yet in practice they're a bunch of lunatic tribalists ready to excommunicate heretics. Punk more generally also elevates individual self-expression, being your own true person. Which sounds great and what attracts many of us to it all. But in practice, people are tribal enough to set up boundaries on what is allowed if you want to be part of a group. Which again is sensible—group identification does require restrictions and expectations, boundaries to organize us. But to those people who disagree with this group rule or that, they'll revert to "a true punk wouldn't say that" (which, ironically, is itself an assertion of restrictions and expectations). We inevitably get stuck in the notion of wanting to be able to express our own interests with minimal restrictions, but get our nose out of joint when others do the same in ways contrary to ours. Like less insane Randians. Does it make us hypocrites or is it just an impossible ideal that we need to stop using as a weapon against those we disagree with? Better to be mature and realize that there is no pure state and that we're always going to be compromising and seeking to balance group and self interest.
Oh and don't forget we were just kids. ;)
Ha! The cool thing about being a kid is falling in love so easily, with people and ideas and causes. Growing up is realizing, even appreciating, contradictions. And maturity is working with those realities to still achieve something good.

Depends on what we think being grown up means. Some ways I'm stupidly immature, some ways as painfully dull and cynical as any adult.

Speaking of stuff way more popular in the UK than the US, coworker is trying to get me into Arctic Monkeys. I've heard their name a ton and assume that I'd know at least a few of their songs. Even the smoking guy album cover is immediately familiar, but holy hell I don't know a single one of their songs on their Spotify most listened to songs. "Do I Wanna Know?" has over a billion listens and I've definitely never heard it.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I like them. Good, catchy, somewhat dingy rock and roll. Their last LP, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino was excellent - a real departure from their normal sound. It took me a few months to get into it, but once I did I realized how good it was.

Ha! Me too. I remember Inder yakking about them when they first got started so I gave them a shot, but they didn't do much for me. They always seem to be in the UK music press, tho, but I haven't been inspired to revisit in any way. Moral of the story: Inder done me wrong and the UK don't care.

After thinking about it a little more, I really recommend the Tranquility Base LP. It really is fantastic. It's fascinating when a band/musician can do such a 180...especially following up a very successful album.

Arctic Monkeys are the UK equivalent of Kings of Leon for me, lots of hype about what global megastars they were going to become but not all that much substance when you get down to it. I was going to suggest Arcade Fire too, but while not a big fan, I'd say they're a lot more musically accomplished.

These 3 and a few others are in my mind the same band. I mean that un the sense I have no idea what they sound like but the same people/magazines seem to rave about them.

I actually don't think Arctic Monkeys are that bad, i mean I wouldn't turn the radio off if they came on or anything, it's just the relentless hype that gets a bit off putting. The music press really needs its super heroes, I guess. Kings of Leon did have one decent enough record and briefly grabbed my attention but i soon bored of them and after that sex on fire atrocity, nothing more needs to be said.

Agreed. Thought the debut single was excellent but a samey album and then diminishing returns. Alex Turner's later adoption of an American accent was pretty ironic after Fake Tales of San Francisco.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board
