Arctic Monkeys are the UK equivalent of Kings of Leon for me, lots of hype about what global megastars they were going to become but not all that much substance when you get down to it. I was going to suggest Arcade Fire too, but while not a big fan, I'd say they're a lot more musically accomplished.
These 3 and a few others are in my mind the same band. I mean that un the sense I have no idea what they sound like but the same people/magazines seem to rave about them.
I actually don't think Arctic Monkeys are that bad, i mean I wouldn't turn the radio off if they came on or anything, it's just the relentless hype that gets a bit off putting. The music press really needs its super heroes, I guess. Kings of Leon did have one decent enough record and briefly grabbed my attention but i soon bored of them and after that sex on fire atrocity, nothing more needs to be said.
I'm with you, like 'em, hear them on the radio periodically, but not sure I'd shell out the bucks to go see them.

Agreed. Thought the debut single was excellent but a samey album and then diminishing returns. Alex Turner's later adoption of an American accent was pretty ironic after Fake Tales of San Francisco.
I remember the whole thing about them moving to Los Angeles and it was like they were going to be instant Hollywood stars or something. I recall thinking what was ever wrong with heading to the states and working your ass off coast to coast, putting the hard yards in. Guess that's old school now, but all felt a bit phoney anyhow.

Seriously, you guys need to listen to Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. It might cause you to at least a little bit rethink the Artic Monkeys.

I'll happily give it a spin soon as i get a chance. Like i said earlier, i don't have much against them, it's just the way the press builds them up, as others said, and it drives up expectations.

Bon Iver is another i struggle with. Everytime i hear him it feels like the same song over and over, the same high pitched caterwauling, and yet the media raves about him over and over. I think the solution is presenting itself here: read less and less media.

I feel the same way about Bon Iver/Justin Vernon and I wonder if I gave his music a chance if it's actually maybe like some of it. It's hard to push past the hype sometimes.

Speaking of Turner, I heard Miracle Aligner by Last of the Shadow Puppets for the first time a few weeks ago and had that "goddammit he's done it again!" feeling I had whenever Mark Ronson would somehow put out banger after banger for that run he had in the 2000s. Chorus is v reminiscent of Swingin Party as well --

Whatever happened to the Sundays, the best Smiths-like band of the 90s, with an adorable singer who probably hasn't become an ethnonationalist (knock on wood)?

Good god, is Bill Haley and the Comets the lamest looking band ever? Everyone one of them.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

they may have looked like dorks, but at least they played some really shitty music too.

I feel like with nearly every genre of music there are older artists who are more than willing to jump on the bandwagon for better or worse.

Is this a common sentiment? Maj was just railing against him on the facebooks.
