Re. RHCP, I like that run of singles they had from By the Way. I thought Universally Speaking was a very good song. Was surpised to just read none of those four singles made the top 30 in the US, they were all decent-sized hits over here.
I own Californiacation and By the Way and enjoyed them plenty at the time, though I don't go back to them much. Their early/mid 90s singles were all over alt radio and MTV and I can still get behind "Soul to Squeeze." And shit, "Give It Away" has a great energetic groove, though I keep forgetting that. I never got into their goofy funk 80s output but I know some people that stand behind them and they are a lot less lame to like since they are weirder and less popular. But yeah, if people shit on them, I don't get upset. I get it. Keidis is pretty unlikable. Flea on the other hand seems to be pretty well loved/respected across the board. Same for Frusciante and Chad Smith, though Smith will enthusiastically do stuff like Chickenfoot.

I just remember when Stadium Arcadium came out, the lead single was "Dani California" and I checked out immediately. It was a complete rewrite of Around the World with some "Mary Jane's Last Dance" thrown in for good measure. I haven't dug into them since then.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

RHCP was fun enough when they were a comedy funk rock band with a little punk edge. As soon as frusciante joined they became intolerable.

I hated californication so, so much when it came out. Still do!

*snort* The board finding commonality in snickering at RHCP has been very heart-warming.

I honestly didn't expect a Hoyston over the By the Way singles.

RHCP seemed a safe pick to me where Heston would side with the majority, but he chose to confound.
