The first 5 R.E.M. albums are so good. Green isn't terrible, but not on part with what they did on I.R.S.
Not a fan of all their work but at their best, i think they were phenomenal. Great lead/backing vocalist combo, just like the Clash imo.

You are a proper Xer, sir. IRS + AFtP, and then blibs and blobs of everything else. "Imitation of Life" is fine wine, tho.

I've been listening to Replacements channel on Pandora at the gym. It plays IRS era REM a lot and I forgot how good they were. Something bad happened to them in the 90s.

Hello,

The first 3 tracks on Accelerate are outstanding.

I like the 'Bingo Hand Job' release, as they seem to be having fun, although the 'Tom's Diner' is a piss-take too far.

Never a band I could get too excited about. Some good songs though for sure and then changed direction and became quite uninteresting.

Their top-5:

1) Murmur
2) Automatic For the People
3) New Adventures in Hi-Fi
4) Reckoning
5) Document

6) Lifes Rich Pageant
7) Fables of the Reconstruction
8) Green

9) Accelerate
10) Collapse into Now

Their bottom-5:

11) Out of Time
12) Monster
13) Reveal
14) Up
15) Around the Sun

They definitely lost it when Bill Berry left. New Adventures is a damned fine record, but then came Up, which is lousy. I applaud artists for trying new things, but the trio of albums: Up, Reveal, Around the Sun were so tuneless and boring. They had a few small glimpses of what made them a great band. The final 2 albums: Accelerate and Collapse into Now are better, but also akin to U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind: a once great band trying to remember what they used to sound like and sometimes succeeding.

I agree. When I first heard those tracks I was reminded how excellent of a band they could be.

Supernatural Superserious is fantastic: crunchy riffs, jangly guitars, live drumming, and some incredible backing vocals from Mike Mills.

I'll also say anyone who hasn't given New Adventures a proper listen should do so. It very well might be their best. It's everything they'd done before taken apart, mixed up, and put back together.

Fables is their best, trailed by AFtP. Dissenters should be condemned to an eternity of Out of Time.

I like Out of Time. May not stand up against their best work, but any album with at least 3 stone cold classic cuts on it doesn't deserve dissing in my book anyway.

INXS is also a regular on the Replacements Pandora station. The are a criminally under appreciate band. Great songs.

I agree. I hear them a lot on 1st Wave on Sirius XM and also always think: damn, they're way better than I've ever given them credit for.

Out of Time is that persistent cough that a more perceptive person thinks should warrant a doctor's appointment. Maybe it's not lung cancer, but this is a warning that should be followed up upon.

Nobody gives them credit for digging up and reanimating Buddy Holly's corpse.
