Re: The Mighty Musical Observations Thread
That's a difficult question to answer. I think a lot of mainstream modern country sucks, but there is good country just below the radar. Charley Crockett, for instance - he's really good. If you're defining country as in the way of Hank - the singer songwriter - I think the genre is alive and well with guys like Jason Isbell (a personal fave) and Sturgill Simpson. It's easy to look at the mainstream charts and there is a lot of pandering, awful garbage: pick up trucks, girls with tans, dogs, Coca-Cola, and so on. I do it myself and get frustrated, but looking a little deeper - there are musicians keeping the genre alive.

Well, the liberals try and tell us
It's wrong to fuck a flag
Now, that's the kind of silly fuss
That'd wrap you in a body bag
I love this country
As much as I love this gun
And for so many reasons, Lord
I think we're number one
Yes I love to take my kids to church
In this fine old USA
I love my woman in the kitchen
Well what more can I say
It's wrong to fuck a flag
Now, that's the kind of silly fuss
That'd wrap you in a body bag
I love this country
As much as I love this gun
And for so many reasons, Lord
I think we're number one

Forces have been looting
My humanity
Curfews have been curbing
The end of liberty
We're the flowers in the dustbin...
No fuchsias for you.

And one more thing, if that flag gets pregnant, no way will our human-flag spawn be denied the right to be born and worship Jesus and own lots of guns!

The good thing about jingoistic country music is that it's repellant aesthetically, ideologically, and morally, so you're never put in some kind of quandary about liking it. Life doesn't offer those kinds of clear choices all that often, so thank you, bigots of Nashville.

I love my in laws, but fuck the music thing is soooo hard to deal with. Can't you put on some oldies or something? I found another ally in the wedding (guy that married J9's cousin), so that was nice.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑03 Aug 2022, 11:22amThe good thing about jingoistic country music is that it's repellant aesthetically, ideologically, and morally, so you're never put in some kind of quandary about liking it. Re: The Mighty Musical Observations Thread
Mixed gatherings are almost painful for me when it comes to music. I don't expect anyone to cater to my interests (c'mon, I ain't that crazy), but the dreck that is supposed to satisfy the majority has me staring at my watch and wishing it would go faster.matedog wrote: ↑03 Aug 2022, 11:28amI love my in laws, but fuck the music thing is soooo hard to deal with. Yeah, me too. I did host a party a few years ago though mostly people from the neighborhood and some former co-workers and I decided to make the music skew more towards my tastes. That said it was far from the extremes of what I will listen to but at the same time much of it was new to these people and while nobody complained directly to me I did get some PA inquiries as to "what are we listening to?"Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑03 Aug 2022, 12:09pmMixed gatherings are almost painful for me when it comes to music. I wish I still had the playlist...maybe I do, it was a bunch of songs or artists that I picked and hit shuffle. We're talking Clash/Strummer/X/Blondie/Jam/Pogues/Elvis Costello, you get the idea. Most people were of a similar vintage so no Hoys wondering why I wasn't playing whoever that annoying pop star is.

Cant recall exact tone, it was more the response/lack of response from my answer that told the storymatedog wrote: ↑03 Aug 2022, 2:02pmWhat was the tone of the "what are we listening to?"revbob wrote: ↑03 Aug 2022, 1:56pmYeah, me too. I could have curated a nearly perfect playlist for most of the people there but that would have been no fun
