The banjo is great but has its place which is not every song the band want to play.

I mean yeah. That kinda locks you into either bluegrass or Appalachian folk in general or a hybrid. Or I guess traditional Irish music can have some.101Walterton wrote: ↑02 Jul 2020, 9:14pmThe banjo is great but has its place which is not every song the band want to play.

Yeah banjo is pretty common in Irish trad.Wolter wrote: ↑02 Jul 2020, 9:29pmI mean yeah. That kinda locks you into either bluegrass or Appalachian folk in general or a hybrid. The reason A Pair of Brown Eyes is one of my favourite songs isn't just Shanes lyrics or vocals, as wonderful as they are, it's the gorgeous understated background accompaniment of banjo and accordion. I love those underappreciated instruments - banjo, accordion, concertina, mouth organ etc. Hearing a guy play bass concertina was one of best musical experiences I've ever had.

I was listening to a Popes show (Live at Montreux '94) this afternoon and A Pair Of Brown Eyes was D.O.A. with the concrete fingered banjo playing and the asthmatic sounding accordion.Low Down Low wrote: ↑03 Jul 2020, 5:47amThe reason A Pair of Brown Eyes is one of my favourite songs isn't just Shanes lyrics or vocals, as wonderful as they are, it's the gorgeous understated background accompaniment of banjo and accordion. Dunno why but i have never listened to a lot of Popes. Strike me as instruments hard to blend in to anything other than a strictly trad setting. When they're good can be amazing, but when they're bad...Silent Majority wrote: ↑03 Jul 2020, 11:01amI was listening to a Popes show (Live at Montreux '94) this afternoon and A Pair Of Brown Eyes was D.O.A. with the concrete fingered banjo playing and the asthmatic sounding accordion.Low Down Low wrote: ↑03 Jul 2020, 5:47amThe reason A Pair of Brown Eyes is one of my favourite songs isn't just Shanes lyrics or vocals, as wonderful as they are, it's the gorgeous understated background accompaniment of banjo and accordion. Hard to believe this is the man who brought us Going Underground. Sounds like the fucking Wurzels. Pack it in Paul...
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Well, that was terrible. His career has followed the same as McCartney's—legendary first band, meh follow-up band, and steady decline as a solo guy, yet ardent fans and critics insist that he's still got it.

Re: The Mighty Musical Observations Thread
Not much change as far as I can see.
Some people might say my tractor's stuck in a rut
But I'm quite happy with the one I've got
People might say that I should plough for more
But I'm so happy I can't see the point
Somethings happening here today
A show of strength with the farm brigade
And I'm so happy and you're so kind
You want more potatoes of course I don't mind
To buy new equipment for better times
And the public gets what the public wants
But I want nothing, I'm happy in my fields
I'm going ploughing again (going ploughing again )
Well the engine turns and the blades start to pound
Going ploughing again (going ploughing again )
Well let the farmboys all sing and the farmboys all plough for tomorrow
Some people might get some pleasure using an old rake
Me, I've enough already on my plate
People might need some time to relax
Me, I'm too busy dodging between the flax
What you see is what you get
You've ploughed your land, it's time to grow in it
You choose your tools and place your trust
Keep them clean and they won't rust
You'll see new machines replace old shovels and forks
And the public gets what the public wants
But I want nothing, I'm happy in my fields
I'm going ploughing again (going ploughing again )
Well the engine turns and the blades start to pound
Going ploughing again (going ploughing again )
Well let the farmboys all sing and the farmboys all plough for tomorrow
I'll plough and plough 'til my tractor explodes
I worked all through the winter 'til my body froze
The lovely sheep I shear real clean
Make this boy smile, make this boy dream!
Going ploughing again
Going ploughing again!
I'm Going ploughing again
I'm Going ploughing again!
The lovely sheep I shear real clean
Make this boy smile, make this boy dream!
Going ploughing again (going ploughing again )
Well the engine turns and the blades start to pound
Going ploughing again (going ploughing again )
Well, let the farmboys all sing and the farmboys all plough
Going ploughing again (going ploughing again )
Well the engine turns and the blades start to pound, pound, pound
Going ploughing again (going ploughing again )
Well, let the farmboys all sing and the farmboys all plough for tomorrow
Forces have been looting
My humanity
Curfews have been curbing
The end of liberty
We're the flowers in the dustbin...
No fuchsias for you.
