I like a handful of their 80s songs, but they were a fairly competent and silly funk band then.

My wife worked for Spin in the 90s and they were notorious misogynous assholes with creepiness issues. I was interested for a minute in the early 90s as they seemed like a cool evolution of 80s skater punk but then they just became frat boy darlings as the 90s crushed forward.

Coincidentally, I gave my Riot Grrrl lecture yesterday, which included the notorious Spin hatchet job that led to the movement's media blackout. I explained that Spin's office was awash in toxic masculinity, which led to a successful lawsuit against Guccione Jr by female staff. So, no surprise Spin found RHCP appealing.

Hello,

I saw them with Fishbone at the Ritz in NYC a long time ago. Fishbone was great - they blew the Chili Peppers away. Fishbone was great. Fishbone came out and encouraged everyone to chant for a Chili Peppers encore - which they did doing their naked with tube socks over their dicks. If you think that's hilarious, you would have really liked the show. My date wasn't impressed (with Chili Peppers - she was surprisingly impressed with Fishbone - did I mention they were great?). This suggests their persona:

Decent music, stupid lyrics.

I do like John Frusciante as a guitar player.

Did she work there with Alan Light? He was EIC in the late 90s, I think. He very much dislikes the Chili Peppers.

I did love them when I was, like, ten. Unlike Heston, I grew up and away from them.
