Now, be honest, would Gene or Paul think that line was beneath them?

I think they would just add "Whoo, hoo, yeah, baby!" to the end of that line.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑11 Oct 2021, 4:12pmNow, be honest, would Gene or Paul think that line was beneath them?

Paul McCartney on the Stones: "I'm not sure I should say it, but they're a blues cover band, that's sort of what the Stones are," said McCartney, adding: "I think our net was cast a bit wider than theirs."
This feels a bit petty. It's not like the Beatles just appeared out of nowhere. They were a 1950's American rock cover band for years before they started writing their own stuff and during the 60s, both bands pushed into new directions. Maybe someone should send McCartney a copy of Between the Buttons.

When was the quote from? 1965? If it was a recent quote that seems oddly petty and also inaccurate. I think his point is that Beatles were ultimately more experimental, which I will agree with, but "blues cover band" is a bit off.WestwayKid wrote: ↑13 Oct 2021, 11:12amPaul McCartney on the Stones: "I'm not sure I should say it, but they're a blues cover band, that's sort of what the Stones are," said McCartney, adding: "I think our net was cast a bit wider than theirs."

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Re: The Mighty Musical Observations Thread
I think The Beatles always saw The Rolling Stones as standing in their shadow. The first 5 Stones singles being covers probably helped form this opinion.
But the "blues cover band" seems a bit harsh. However they are great at what they do best.

Just learned tonight that the chords for High Voltage are ACDC and the world is ever so slightly a better place. Off to play it loud, real loud.
