For me, it's more an uninformed expectation that there can't be much more room for the music to sound better. Those remasters from a decade ago sounded fantastic to me, so these new editions surprise by how much better yet they sound.

Better technology improves all the time. Much money time and effort and the best studio and production facilities. They simply have to be great. When I can improve sound with my meagre set up then something for The Beatles no less than excellent will do.

I suspect that's true inasmuch as they heard the mixes and all that based on the quality of the technology at the time, which was inferior to what we have now. Maybe weirdos like Brian Wilson could hear something absolutely pristine and distinct in his head, and was frustrated that the technology couldn't capture it, but the sound quality now is so much better than what those musicians and producers would have had when recording and mixing and evaluating the results.

Yes all this is true and of course you mentioned Brian Wilson who was a perfectionist and had a clear vision of the sound he wanted to create. There have been some brilliant producers down the years. Some like Bill Price who understood what the band needed and then guys like Trevor Horn who understood totally how to mix sound layer upon layer with great clarity. FGtH would've been crap without his genius.
