Apart from the drum sound on the final version I agree.Heston wrote:The Peel session version of Gangsters by the Specials is now definitive for me.
The demo of Making Plans For Nigel is better than the released version too.

Can anyone suggest a link to The Specials Peel Session? I wouldn't mind hearing that version of 'Gangsters' as I think the single is good enough.

Prefer:
- the "Children of Men" version of Bring on the Lucie as opposed to the Mind Games version
- the rocked-up B-side version of Smithers-Jones as opposed to the Setting Sons orchestral version (not sure which is the more popular version though)
- the Peel Sessions version of Here Comes the Summer
- the "Children of Men" version of Bring on the Lucie as opposed to the Mind Games version

I agree with Smithers, but the lack of organ on the Undertones track marks it down for me.drowninghere wrote:Prefer:

I love the chanting at the end, and the little off-kilter guitar that isn't in the original.Marky Dread wrote:I couldn't choose between the two.Wolter wrote:I just heard it about 30 minutes ago and thought the exact same thing.Heston wrote:The Peel session version of Gangsters by the Specials is now definitive for me.

Yeah I love that too. I just love the single version also as I remember when I first heard it at a fair ground in Southsea on a day trip in '79. It hadn't charted at the time and there was this skinhead guy there who it had. I remember how great it sounded pumping out of these big speakers. Within a week it was top 10. A magical record.Heston wrote:I love the chanting at the end, and the little off-kilter guitar that isn't in the original.Marky Dread wrote:I couldn't choose between the two.Wolter wrote:I just heard it about 30 minutes ago and thought the exact same thing.Heston wrote:The Peel session version of Gangsters by the Specials is now definitive for me.

Beating a dead horse here, but the other alternate version of Roadrunner that's 4:55 and has that awesome shriek Jonathan does when he says "alright, Modern Lovers!" is also great...
