Hmm...in line with what he's written about Reagan, but I've seen him write of Bruce (circa Born In The USA) "I don't mind his music though. In a place like this, I see where he's coming from." The 'place like this' was some midwest city I don't remember. Never knew him to be anti-Bruce, though. Sting and Bono are another story entirely.

I've wondered about that myself, as he and Springsteen certainly seem to have shared values.

Still, that's a hilarious anecdote. And one I will be sure to use against Hoy whenever possible.

Fix a date and time for the Family Man liveblogging?

If I can do it, I will at whatever time everyone picks, but there's a chance I'll be moving. So I'm recusing myself from the vote.

What did I say, Thursday or Friday? Either still works. I'd prefer Friday evening since I can get my whiskey on with no repercussions.

A long lost Friday night of it. Works for me.

"I'm the One" has a very Killing Joke riff.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

This morning/afternoon is my designated "Pre-Rollins" portion of the week. "Six Pack" is so fucking good it hurts. I also remember how much I want to make sweet, angry love to "You Bet We've Got Something Personal Against You!" and "American Waste". I would have American Waste's manbabies so fucking hard.

I was trying to listen in order, but I made an error on my playlist, so Everything Went Black came after the 82 demos. So I just drifted BACK to pre-Rollins.

The essential BF, IMO. The vibe with old school Flag was very much a revenge of the nerds thing- using aggressive music as a weapon against the bullies and the cops. Dez - gangly, shy, awkward but wielding a blowtorch of a voice- is the apotheosis of this. Rollins changed the vibe of hardcore forever, with the steroids and the swinging dick. I remember sitting with the guys from Jerry's Kids and Gang Green when Damaged came out- it was shortly before the sessions for This is Boston, Not LA. Everyone thought the record was awful, a very poor reflection of the band's power onstage. But the worst part about it was the descent into machismo that came after. Hardcore was no longer a latchkey kid tantrum- it was music for prep school jocks from Xaverian and Don Bosco to pummel people in the pit to. But there were two very compelling outside factors in play here, in Boston at least. First was the constant violence in Kenmore Sq and other club districts, when packs of Southie boys would show up and beat punks up every Fri and Sat. That stopped pretty quickly. But the feeling of betrayal watching all of the old school bands chase commercial acceptance was an ever more compelling inspiration. Hardcore was essentially reactive- which is why the best records were all the earliest ones. When you have a situation where SSD is playing to bigger crowds than Mission Persons or someone like that, where do you go? To shitty metal, mostly.
