Re: seven song shuffle
Far from the best but it cuts a nice little tune and the guitar noodling at the end is spunky.

Re: seven song shuffle
Girl On the Phone is one of the Jam's poorer efforts for me, to open the album with it was a bit bizarre.
Love the Kim Carnes song.

I agree "Girl On the Phone" B-side material. I too love the melody in the Kim Carnes tune.

One of my favourites on the album, always loved GOTP. The chorus is epic musically, Weller and Foxton yet again truly complimenting each other.
Bette Davis Eyes also is fantastically good, tune lovely and atmospheric.

Lyrically not up to the standard of the rest of the album.BitterTom wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:00pmOne of my favourites on the album, always loved GOTP. The chorus is epic musically, Weller and Foxton yet again truly complimenting each other.

I still like Girl On the Phone, it's just not as good as the rest of that great album, maybe aside from the cover of Heatwave.Marky Dread wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:33pmLyrically not up to the standard of the rest of the album.BitterTom wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:00pmOne of my favourites on the album, always loved GOTP. I like Heatwave but no way that belongs on the album. Should've been a B-side. Smithers Jones shouldve been swapped album version for B-side version.Heston wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:37pmI still like Girl On the Phone, it's just not as good as the rest of that great album, maybe aside from the cover of Heatwave.Marky Dread wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:33pmLyrically not up to the standard of the rest of the album.BitterTom wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:00pmOne of my favourites on the album, always loved GOTP. Nope I agree, though still doesn't take away a great tune for me personally. Then again I am a philistine!Marky Dread wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:33pmLyrically not up to the standard of the rest of the album.BitterTom wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:00pmOne of my favourites on the album, always loved GOTP. Re: seven song shuffle
Would easily be their best album if the proper version of SJ was on there.Marky Dread wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:44pmI like Heatwave but no way that belongs on the album. Should've been a B-side. Edit: Already is my favourite album, meant to say would easily be a perfect album.

It's not bad at all far from it. But around this time The Jam set high standards.BitterTom wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:47pmNope I agree, though still doesn't take away a great tune for me personally. Re: seven song shuffle
Agreed and agreed. Would be a very short album though with the removal of Heatwave. The addition of When You're Young would put it into classsic territory, and fits thematically with the album. Though I know they had a VFM thing going on at the time, with singles being kept off albums.Marky Dread wrote: ↑03 Feb 2020, 4:44pmI like Heatwave but no way that belongs on the album.
