Kiss were a protopunk band. Those first few records just sound like sloppy stonesy rock in the vein of the New York dolls. N2m they played Max’s Kansas City and CBGBs with bands like television, dolls, Ramones and Lou reed. They were always despised by their peers though. I don’t think they ever really 100% truly fit in.

Yes! I've been saying this for years to total derision.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

I mean early punk music was pretty much just mid tempo stonesy type rock with heavy use of barre chords. And despite the manifesto of “no Elvis Beatles or The Rolling Stones” a lot of the clash music was exactly that. Not somuch Beatles, but plenty of early RNR copping.

This post is totally missing the point of “no Elvis Beatles or The Rolling Stones” because you didn't add "in 1977". The song is not a put down on those bands great years but a put down of what they had become by 1977. It's similar to Joe having "Chuck Berry Is Dead" stenciled on his shirt. Joe is obviously a huge Chuck Berry fan but by 1977 and the appalling "My Ding-a-ling" topping the charts. Musically Chuck Berry was dead.

He has braved the waters to join our dysfunctional family. So we accept him as one of us. Gabba gabba.

I'm waiting to hear his position on Swans. My vote can still be had, but I'm reaching for the black ball. :shifty:

edit: Plus I see that Jen is slated to take over chairing duties for the admissions subcommittee on 1 April. New guy better brush up on his Depeche Mode or else she'll keep him from even getting a vote.

Truly an enigma.

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead

Wait you're an Exploited fan too?

We gotta do something about that grandfather clause.

He just scooted himself in real comfortably, didn't he?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

It’s like he smoothly parallel-parked right between Flex’s Windowless Killbot Van and Heston’s Weird English Jalopy.

EDIT: I’m actually glad we finally have someone else whose unpopular music opinions veer towards rock music and not weird toothless pop.
