Mainstream art and culture was surely at one of its lowest troughs circa 2002. What a horrible time for the mainstream.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard ... es_of_2002

Mainstream rock was pretty awful from like 99-02. 02 was the last year before White Stripes/Strokes/etc. brought things back to good for a few years. The pop/R&B isn't too bad on this list though.
Is the mainstream ever not awful, or boring/unchallenging. I mean that's the nature of the beast right? Budweiser, McDonald's, vanilla, etc...
Mainstream rock in general was in very low ebb then though. I will agree with Hoy here. Genuinely nothing new or remotely interesting made it through to radio in my recollection, whereas 2003-2006 or so had at least a few fun singles. Again, 90% of everything is trash, but like 99% of everything felt like trash then.

Painting with broad strokes on the rock genre, but I think the grunge movement was a lot more interesting than the hair metal movement that preceded it. Same for the sorta garage rock trend of 01-04ish that followed the nu-metal movement that preceded it.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Yeah, it's hard to truly overstate how horrible nu-metal and all that shit was. You had charts full of limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, kid rock and so forth. Just the worst fucking bullshit.

It's also worth noting that rock has been losing it's vitality for quite some time. There's just not as much progress/interesting stuff going on mainstream or not. Hip hop has been a lot weirder/more creative over that time period. I've always preferred rock to hip hop (though there is plenty I love), so it's a hard pill to swallow.

Rock has been in a cul de sac for at least a couple decades now. Which isn't to say that it's all shit, but that we're not going to hear anything in rock that makes us pause and think this is going to change the direction of things. Which is fine. All forms of artistic expression burn out and become echoes. Life goes on.

Hello,

I think it was George Thoroughgood who was asked why he didn't write more songs and replied " 'Cause Chuck Berry wrote all the good ones already!".

Gene, Nelson, and Maynard from Tool. A group of people I never imagined to be in the same room together.

A strange punchline that makes one wish to know the set-up.

I remember reading an article by someone who used to work in the porn biz (behind the camera), and the one thing people aren't prepared for is that porn sets fucking reek. It's serious piss, shit, fuck fumes, and b.o. You get used to it, but it's pretty rank. Anyway, yeah, being in that room.

I remember from Criss' bio that Gene used to (or still does) not shower after shows and stay in costume when he was on the prowl for tail. Can't imagine how bad he smelled.
