This is the MTV people were nostalgic for in the 90s when they stopped playing videos?
I sincerely believe the MTV people are nostalgic for was that brief, early window before MTV became significant. Or, as nostalgia works, a selective filtering that ignores the shit for the peanuts.

Doc's Unmasked review fails to mention how good Talk To Me, She's So European and Shandi are. Otherwise it is garbage and not a patch on the excellent Dynasty.

I believe I gave all the songs the praise they merit.

Also, didn't Wolt like Shandi or was it someone else?

"Shandi" pulls up NINE pages of results. Primarily Heston singing its praises and thinking Wolter likes it as well followed by Wolter's full throated denial.

Perhaps we need another board crash.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Wolter liking "Shandi" seems to be Heston's personal Mandela effect. He just can't let go of the false memory that nobody likes it, least of all Wolter.

Shame on us for letting that fall into disuse; cheers to Flex for bringing it back.

Time to see if this Shandi song is as good as Hes and Wolt think it is.

Maybe my standards have been lowered by all the late 80's KISS I've been listening to, but this one is kind of alright. The groove is great. Credit session drummer Anton Fig. I doubt Criss could groove this well. Some interesting chord changes and lovely campy 70s backing vocals (I guess 1980 still counts as the 70s). Great breakdown at 2:30 and a fun fill from Fig again. Some nice work from their roadie on bass too. Apparently Gene just comes and goes at will in this band without the same repercussions as Criss/Ace.

I had hopes that you'd escaped Tom Hoyston Psychiatric Hospital, but I see its pull is strong.

This week we are back in rocker territory with "Rise to It," the less successful follow up to their chart topping monster ballad "Forever."

The first song off of Hot in the Shade, the song opens with an unexpected and kinda pointless acoustic like Delta blues slide guitar solo. The real song does begin with a bass fill, a nice touch though Gene opts not to mime it for the video. The first chorus goes into a fun call and response vocal bridge between Paul and Gene. Second verse sounds like another bridge but has a nice sorta key change before going back to the main key for the chorus. Unnecessary but at least shows that there was some thought put into the song. Same goes for the last verse. The last chorus has a cool drums/vocals mini-prechorus. Nice little songwriting trick to mix it up a bit. The chorus hook isn't very memorable, but this song at least tries to be musically interesting and I can appreciate that.

Lyrically, Paul seems to be fretting about middle age in the pre-Viagra days. The song is basically nonsensical drivel "A little danger a little fun, we're going to take them one by one", punctuated by Paul promising he can perform in the sack, "When you're lying next to me, baby, I can guarantee I'm going to rise to it."

The video opens with a flashback to 1975 where Gene and Paul get to flex their not bad acting skills. They have more chemistry together than I had expected. You get to see the back of the body doubles for Vinnie and Peter as well. Gene and Paul suggest that they could still be successful without their makeup and play clubs again before flashing forward to 1990 where a makeup less kiss perform in an overly lit industrial club for fans and a lot of photographers. There is a crutch that's in like half the shots too. But hey, having an energetic crowd helps the energy and Paul/Gene seem to be having a fun time. This is almost enjoyable. The video ends back in 75 with Paul/Gene in makeup going on stage. I guess KISS in makeup was a novelty in 1990, but the whole concept of the video is an inversion of where KISS ultimately ended up.

Song grade: B
Video grade: B

That's it for the pre-God Gave singles. Next week I'll start my backward trek through the 80s with "Let's Put the 'X' in Sex."

What's funny about the prologue is that KISS had gone without make-up for, what, seven years by then and they're still trying to assert some kind of legitimacy that they don't need the gimmick? That's a move you do on the first make-up-less record, not the fifth.

Good point. That should be more a Lick It Up move.
