Kill 'Em All wasn't bad, but just felt they needed fine tuning to get them to their peak. Not bad for a debut though. Black Album had it's moments but couldn't replicate the perfect sound RTL and MOP had. How about their Cut the Crap, St Anger? I've actually warmed to some of the tracks on there, especially the title, Some Kind of Monster and Dirty Window. Most of it was an assault to the ears though.

I don't think I've ever heard St. Anger (or anything since that album). I tend to prefer rawer, more brutal metal so it's rep actually always sort of appealed (but obviously not enough to actually go check it out).

Honestly worth a go if you like that style. The drums have been replaced by dustbins I warn you though.

Relistening to Metallica. Not a fan of all their work but Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All were fantastic. Starting with Justice, the sound isn't as good as the others, not a massive fan of the drums and the bass is virtually non exiatant bit there's some great tracks on there. Highlights are the excellent opener Blackened, Eye of the Beholder with one of my favourite rhythms in a song ever and of course One, such a brilliant piece of work.

It's been a while since I've really spun Metallica with an ear for careful listening, but I used to really dig their first record, Kill 'Em All, and the old Garage Days release(s). The other albums you mention - basically everything up until The Black Album - I was always reasonably amenable to. Never cared for much from '91 onwards, although I enjoy the Mighty Mighty Yucktones' cover of Enter Sandman.

Total magic.

The perfect song, maybe the best single of the 60s for me. Well, that and Tin Soldier by the Small Faces.

AJFA would be massive if the bass existed. Some great riffs on that album.
