Re: What Are you Listening to Right Now?
I generally like Wire and the accompanying mini-lp Nocturnal Koreans, but they weren't all that notable, but things have been notably ho-hum since. The strange thing is that the various groups that Graham Lewis (most with Matt Simms) has been in for the last five or six years have put out some exceptional records (e.g., UUUU). Which kind of points the finger at Colin Newman and his vision of what Wire is. Unfortunately.Marky Dread wrote: ↑16 Sep 2022, 5:22pmThis is a great record. I'm torn as to whether they should've stopped. But they haven't matched it in any shape or form. Seem to be treading water since.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑14 Sep 2022, 7:42pm
As a concept—taking 30+ year-old abandoned song ideas and trying to resuscitate them—it could have resulted in complete farce, but it turned out to be one of the best records in their arsenal. There's an argument, too, that this would have been a good time to stop.

I like both those records and Red Barked Trees. But they don't live up to Change Becomes Us. I think your correct also regards Newmans vision for the band. But you know that Wire are still capable of surprising us. And like many other early post punk bands the early albums are untouchable.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑16 Sep 2022, 5:53pmI generally like Wire and the accompanying mini-lp Nocturnal Koreans, but they weren't all that notable, but things have been notably ho-hum since. Re: What Are you Listening to Right Now?
I sincerely believe that they should get an outside producer to shake shit up. I know Colin says that him producing Wire means they have someone who actually understands Wire, but that's a bit self-serving. His perspective is valid (duh) but I think it's hindering creativity. They were a band deservedly known for not being complacent, yet that's exactly what they seem to me.Marky Dread wrote: ↑16 Sep 2022, 6:05pmI like both those records and Red Barked Trees. She does like to be naked on all her album covers. I don’t mind…
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

The band's complaint about Manscape was that producer David Allen didn't understand the band. Well, maybe that was the problem with that record. And in 2001 or so, they tried recording with Albini, and that didn't go well. I suspect they're really insular at this point. But I agree that someone well outside the camp would be a good idea.

How about someone way younger than them and not a named producer.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑17 Sep 2022, 6:25amMarky Dread wrote: ↑17 Sep 2022, 5:13amHaving some who doesn't understand Wire would push the boundaries.

I could see the band bullying someone without cred and serious self-confidence. But it would do them well.Marky Dread wrote: ↑17 Sep 2022, 7:42amHow about someone way younger than them and not a named producer.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑17 Sep 2022, 6:25amMarky Dread wrote: ↑17 Sep 2022, 5:13amHaving some who doesn't understand Wire would push the boundaries.
