Nice.

I listened to Tapestry by Carole King. Not my usual cup of tea, but a quality album, still.

Yeah. Ali got that after we got tickets to her musical. I agree with that assessment. King is an excellent songwriter who mainly works in a style that isn’t really fit me, but I recognize the talent and can enjoy it in small doses.

Surprising too because 83 was pretty late in the game for straight forward melodic 77 punk. Them and Peter and the test tube babies definitely seem like a throwback.

It kind of reminds me of TV Personalities as well. A lot of the vocal harmonies are reminiscent.

All the early stuff was Ramones inspired but they found their voice and made some great stuff. I've got everything they released.

Explains the Ramones references lol. They’re very much in the vein of Clash like political conciousness.

Honestly one of the upsides of the internet is discovering all of this music I never knew existed. If only musicians could become unionized to get a fair share. But growing up in the 2000s with Clear Channel radio consolidation raping any variety on the radio seriously sucked. My knowledge of music was pretty much limited to like 77 punk and classic rock staples.

Much worse stuff than that I guess. I'm lucky growing up through the punk years and having been a music fan from a very early age.

I honestly just hate how focus tested everything became. Tons of great 2000s groups got relegated to hipster status because modern rock radio wouldn’t touch anything that didn’t sound like Nickleback. I don’t even recall the strokes getting much radio play around here which is kind of baffling. Meanwhile you could watch an American apparel commercial without being bombarded by that twangy indie shit. I really think that led to the decline in popularity of rock music. Baby Boomers just hated anything post 1989 and refused to market it. Meanwhile hip hop was seen as eminently more marketable. Honestly Spotify has improved things. I see a lot of people who unironically love Cardi B and stuff like The Clash... barriers have been broken I guess. A lot of Modern hip hop production is also a melange as well. Lots of guitar popping up. I think my only gripe with it is how overly consumerist fetishizing it is. There’s a lot of great hip hop artists touching on the Police Brutality shit, then you also just have mindless braindead shit. Which is fine tbh. I feel like rap is currently in its hair metal phase.
