I love ELO, great pop music.
We're talking about James White now.
I have Medulla on ignore.
 I'm your conscience in the flesh, boy.
It's going to be a good Monday.

The combination of gkbill mentioning James Chance in that saxamaphone discussion the other day and me currently writing a lecture on No Wave got me to load this up again. Half joke (often offensively so) and half seriously groovy mutant disco. Great stuff.
That brings back memories. I used to work with Pat Place, back around 1989 or so. My old boss was Don Christensen's ex-wife.
Just as, push comes to shove, I'll take UK post-punk over punk, I'll take No Wave over American punk, intellectually and aesthetically.
Entered into the record without objection.

I will make an exception for X and the Germs though.

Yeah, I'm certainly not intending to be doctrinaire about any of this. There are tons of counter examples of punk bands that I adore, but in terms of the directions that are being pushed, post-punk was more constructive and more intellectually inspiring.

Dear radio playlist selectors,

Mr. Blue Sky is not, in fact, the only ELO song the band made. Furthermore, not only did they record more music, some was actually better.
Yes but they all sound like Mr Blue Sky, or the Travelling Wilburys or The Beatles 1995 version etc..
10538 is a great tune though!
Agreed. Go listen to Changing Man by Paul Weller.
I like your recommendations a lot. That worked it's way straight into my playlist, enjoyed that immensely.

Hmm. The ones I’ve always heard the most are Evil Woman and Don’t Bring Me Down.
Yeah to be fair Dont Bring Me Down has it's fair share of radio play but 80% of the time I listen, if it's ELO, it's Blie Sky.

Same here and they don't sound like Mr. Blue Sky.
They made some good pop songs but everything by Jeff Lynne has that ‘chug chug chug’ back beat and drums that sound like the music teacher trying to keep the school band in time.
There is a great doco about him filmed in house in LA.

Seen the doc and enjoyed it. I like his early 60s band the Idle Race.

Came across a reference to this in a book. Never heard of the magazine, but Tellus, I gather, put out weird cassette compilations of underground artists. This one caught my eye because it has a piece by Sue Hanel, an early Swans member. People like Thurston Moore swore by her ability—and this one track is pretty shit hot—but nobody knows what happened to her (common speculation is that she od'd). Anyhoo, this is some cool guitar snark.

I do like ABC's records but I also like the tongue in cheek humour.

Just watched the Jeff Lynne doc. Insane that he remade loads of his ELO songs about 7 years ago and released them as a "Best Of ELO" album. What a waste of time and effort recreating those already superbly produced and performed records.

Yes they don’t sound any different to me perhaps it was a money / royalties thing as didn’t he play just about every instrument and produce the remakes.

No, it was definitely an artistic decision. He explained it all and is rich as fuck anyway.
