The combination of gkbill mentioning James Chance in that saxamaphone discussion the other day and me currently writing a lecture on No Wave got me to load this up again. Half joke (often offensively so) and half seriously groovy mutant disco. Great stuff.

I will make an exception for X and the Germs though.IkarisOne wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 2:13pmEntered into the record without objection.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 1:30pmJust as, push comes to shove, I'll take UK post-punk over punk, I'll take No Wave over American punk, intellectually and aesthetically.IkarisOne wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 1:19pmThat brings back memories. Yeah, I'm certainly not intending to be doctrinaire about any of this. There are tons of counter examples of punk bands that I adore, but in terms of the directions that are being pushed, post-punk was more constructive and more intellectually inspiring.Kory wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 2:32pmI will make an exception for X and the Germs though.IkarisOne wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 2:13pmEntered into the record without objection.Dr. I like your recommendations a lot. That worked it's way straight into my playlist, enjoyed that immensely.Marky Dread wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 11:57amAgreed. They made some good pop songs but everything by Jeff Lynne has that ‘chug chug chug’ back beat and drums that sound like the music teacher trying to keep the school band in time.Marky Dread wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 11:58amSame here and they don't sound like Mr. Blue Sky.
There is a great doco about him filmed in house in LA.

Seen the doc and enjoyed it. I like his early 60s band the Idle Race.101Walterton wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 6:36pmThey made some good pop songs but everything by Jeff Lynne has that ‘chug chug chug’ back beat and drums that sound like the music teacher trying to keep the school band in time.Marky Dread wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 11:58amSame here and they don't sound like Mr. Blue Sky.

Came across a reference to this in a book. Never heard of the magazine, but Tellus, I gather, put out weird cassette compilations of underground artists. This one caught my eye because it has a piece by Sue Hanel, an early Swans member. People like Thurston Moore swore by her ability—and this one track is pretty shit hot—but nobody knows what happened to her (common speculation is that she od'd). Anyhoo, this is some cool guitar snark.

I do like ABC's records but I also like the tongue in cheek humour.

Just watched the Jeff Lynne doc. Insane that he remade loads of his ELO songs about 7 years ago and released them as a "Best Of ELO" album. What a waste of time and effort recreating those already superbly produced and performed records.101Walterton wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 6:36pmThey made some good pop songs but everything by Jeff Lynne has that ‘chug chug chug’ back beat and drums that sound like the music teacher trying to keep the school band in time.Marky Dread wrote: ↑29 Jul 2019, 11:58amSame here and they don't sound like Mr. Blue Sky.

Yes they don’t sound any different to me perhaps it was a money / royalties thing as didn’t he play just about every instrument and produce the remakes.Heston wrote: ↑30 Jul 2019, 6:53pmJust watched the Jeff Lynne doc. No, it was definitely an artistic decision. He explained it all and is rich as fuck anyway.101Walterton wrote: ↑30 Jul 2019, 7:29pmYes they don’t sound any different to me perhaps it was a money / royalties thing as didn’t he play just about every instrument and produce the remakes.Heston wrote: ↑30 Jul 2019, 6:53pmJust watched the Jeff Lynne doc.
