Re: The Jam
Happy to be 101Walterton on this one although from memory TeddyB agrees with me. Don't get me wrong I love SS but for me AMC has more edge ?? The single tracks either side are brilliant as well (Strange Town / Butterfly Collector and When You're Young) capture The Jam at their height for me.Wolter wrote:Woly Pox.Kory wrote:I prefer to think this about Setting Sons, which AMC served as a bridge to.101Walterton wrote:All Mod Cons is alomost as perfect as COL.

Re: The Jam
Setting Sons is up there with London Calling for me. A great listen, and the short length doesn't bother me. I'd always take being left wanting more over than a record boring me as I will it to end.

Re: The Jam
I'm pretty torn between SS and AMC for best Jam album. At gunpoint I'd plump for All Mod Cons.

Re: The Jam
Hard to name a definitive top 3 cos it changes all the time with such a great band. Also, some stuff tends to get overplayed, Malice etc. Here's 3 I usually keep coming back to...
Running On the Spot
The Place I Love
Strange Town

Sound Affects was their LC in my opinion.

I know I've mentioned before, but it's criminal how this wasn't released instead of the overcooked single version. The drums sound fantastic...

Re: The Jam
I'd like to ask at what stage did you get into The Jam ? as I think this may have a bearing on what is your prefered album (as is often the case with The Clash).

Re: The Jam
I love a lot of Sound Affects but side 2 tails off a bit, and it's a bit overproduced. Dream Time is a good example of this, the demo is great but the LP version just sounds cluttered.Chuck Mangione wrote:Sound Affects was their LC in my opinion.

Re: The Jam
I'd heard the big singles at the Youth Club disco, but it was buying Snap on release (late 83) that got me heavily into them. What a superb compilation that original double vinyl was. I picked up all the albums pretty soon afterwards.101Walterton wrote:I'd like to ask at what stage did you get into The Jam ? as I think this may have a bearing on what is your prefered album (as is often the case with The Clash).

Re: The Jam
First Jam song I heard was "Going Underground" (which is one of my all time favorite songs period). The first album was a twofer of Modern World/All Mod Cons.
I think the run from AMC through SA is stellar, and cannot fault anyone who lists any of those three as his favorite.

Which one is it ?
A demo version was first released on the Snap! compilation. This featured engineer Peter Wilson on drums and Paul Weller on all other instruments. A later demo version with Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler in their respective roles appeared on the Direction Reaction Creation boxed set. These versions feature a fuller arrangement, but lacked the flourishes of the final released version. The version which appears on The Sound of the Jam and Paul Weller's Hit Parade is the "Snap!" version with the bass and drums removed.
