I would have easily had them in my top 5 but considered them a sixties band. Should have put some parameters up maybe?
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Yeah you are correct although The Equals were active 'til '79. But in fairness all the great stuff came before 1970.

So they are really a 60's group. Replaced them with Bob Marley & the Wailers.

Alice Coopers early group?

Was thinking of picking Alice/New York Dolls/The Stooges but I got into all of those artists after punk happened. So I picked those artists who mattered to me before punk.

So obvious choices like the Stooges, MC5 and the Sonics are out because the started in the 60's?

The idea should really have been bands pre punk who were having hits in the 70's. I didn't really think this one through too well. So blame me, my bad.

Maybe it's me but I don't feel like you've cleared things up much. For instance the Who comes to mind now. And are "hits" a requirement? I'm probably over thinking this.

*high five*

I left off non-punk bands who either formed after/didn't release good songs until after 1976.
1. Bowie
2. T. Rex
3. NY Dolls
4. Roxy Music
5. Fuck all y'all, Led Zeppelin

Runners up from my brainstorm list:

Slade
Be-Bop Deluxe
Raspberries
Can
Alice Cooper
Jumpsuit Elvis
King Crimson
Residents
Big Star
Sweet

My criteria: a band that really didn't hit their stride before the 70s. They could have been around in the sixties. Standard exemption for Jumpsuit Elvis.

All of Wolt's picks are the correct picks. Given the nature of the pick this week, I'll say that I feel compelled to try to stick to the idioms of pop and rock, since branching off into country, jazz, etc. would simply make the whole endeavor too vast to be of any meaning whatsoever. Here's my attempt:

1. David Bowie
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Black Sabbath
4. Big Star
5. Kraftwerk

I almost went Zappa, since I usually think I prefer his 70s material over his 60s stuff, but the truth is is 1969 is his actual best year so he doesn't quite make it.

Also, goes without saying that tep already made the best list.
