I haven’t listened to much U2 beyond Joshua Tree, but I do like Zooropa.Marky Dread wrote: ↑29 Dec 2021, 11:56amI don't care much about the hate. I really liked their earlier stuff, saw them a couple of times, once in the 80's & again in the early 90's. I think the last album (CD) I purchased was Zooropa.Kimmelweck wrote: ↑29 Dec 2021, 12:32pmI haven’t listened to much U2 beyond Joshua Tree, but I do like Zooropa.Marky Dread wrote: ↑29 Dec 2021, 11:56amI don't care much about the hate. I have a friend who is a serious U2 fan—he planned family vacations around U2 tours—and he did his best to not quite convert but entice me. He made me a mix called "U2 For People Who Hate Bono." He read his target audience right, but nevertheless did not succeed.

"U2 For People Who Hate U2" should have done the job.

Read this piece in the Sunday Times a few weeks back. It's paywalled anyway, but jist of it is it was 20 years since the release of All That You Can't Leave Behind and this critic reckoned that's when they took the wrong turn, abandoned the adventurism of the 80s and 90s to play it safe instead. I mean, I would think there's probably something in that, but no one would pay me a nice salary just to say that!

Would you be interested in a swap for some Phish or Steely Dan fans?

Re: Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
Their take is not wrong (in my opinion). Pop was out there (in mostly a good, if underrated, way). All That You Can't Leave Behind sounded like a band playing it safe by playing what they felt U2 should sound like. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb was more of the same. I do think No Line On The Horizon had some interestingly weird moments. It felt more textured, sort of The Unforgettable Fire for the 21st Century. The most recent albums should have been edited down to a single. There are some decent songs, but the interesting tracks are undercut by the playing it safe songs.Low Down Low wrote: ↑29 Dec 2021, 1:46pmRead this piece in the Sunday Times a few weeks back.
