Re: Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
I know the charts were never the font of all knowing music wisdom, but I think I'm correct in saying they always treated ep's the same as singles so, whether technically correct, that be good enough for me.Marky Dread wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 9:37amThe "Cost of Living" ep was released as a 4 track single here in the UK. Other territories have one track per side. I know which I prefer. I don't relate to a 7" single only having a "single" track per side. The single to me is a piece of 7" vinyl. Then latter as become popular as a 12" single. A mini LP is usually a 6 track affair.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 8:31amPerhaps I'm just a traditionalist in seeing the model of the 7" format, with one song on each side, as the single. To use your example, there was "I Fought the Law" off Cost of Living, but there was also a 7" of it, with one song per side. To me, the latter is the single. The ep or mini-lp is the middle child between the single and the album. It all got muddled when cd singles came along that had as many songs as an ep, as well as the alternative 12" single for (mainly) dance music, but, yeah, I'm a traditionalist in seeing a distinction between single and ep. Not enough to end a friendship over, but you know.Marky Dread wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 8:18amAll ep's have a lead off track that gets radio airplay. That's the (single) track being promoted. Cost of Living ep "I Fought the Law". A single can have more than one track each side. Ep just means extended play. So the band are giving you more for your money. A single being defined either by a 7" or 12" which can also be an ep.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 7:23amDo ep's count as singles? Unless Side A only has one song on it, should it be considered a single?Marky Dread wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 6:13am
Also wasn't "An Ideal for Living" ep the debut single from Joy Division. That makes "Transmission" their second release.
(Maybe we need a Hespoll for the question.)
Many 7" singles released especially in the punk/new era had 1 track as an A-side and 2 tracks as B-sides. Yet don't get listed as ep's.
I think of ep's as a 4 track affair with 2 track per side. But the idea with all ep's or single sided 7"s is the lead off side A track is used as the main promotion tool. Not always promoting a current long player. Of course you can find exceptions to this.
As to a Hespoll I would prefer to listen to a dog taking a shit.

people who don't think the exploited were that good to begin with fail to appreciate just how much worse they got by the late 80s.

There's a lot of arrogance in thinking things can't be worse. That's just a solid life lesson.

I suppose one would eventually come to some horrible truth about themselves if they regularly listened to The Exploited a la David Byrne in "Once In a Lifetime."Flex wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 12:20pmI think what you're telling me here is that listening to the exploited is the path to spiritual enlightenment.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 11:51amThere's a lot of arrogance in thinking things can't be worse.
