Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
Re: Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
Hello,
I don't know if people would think this too early (New York Dolls - S/T) or this too late (Superchunk - S/T). Some will say Superchunk is indie/alternative rock, but I would label them punk. Anything else I've got has already been posted. Ramones S/T runs away with it.

Marky cut off the start at 1976 (so I couldn't include one of my all-time faves, Patti Smith's Horses) but no end date. It's just telling that there are almost no albums listed after about '82.gkbill wrote: ↑02 May 2019, 12:40pmHello,

Yeah the only reason fo chosing '76 as a cut-off is so we get to pick a proto punk top 5 follow up which will include stuff up to '75. I see Horses as the last great proto punk record. I mean you could put the Modern Lovers in this weeks top 5 as they released their debut in '76 but the material was recorded way earlier. A big favourite of mine that ML album.Flex wrote: ↑02 May 2019, 12:54pmMarky cut off the start at 1976 (so I couldn't include one of my all-time faves, Patti Smith's Horses) but no end date. Re: Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
Yeah this is a tough call and are we including what we then called hardcore under the broader punk moniker? It seems many have...
Ramones - Ramones
Fesh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables - Dead Kennedys
Bad Brains- Bad Brains
How Could Hell be any Worse - Bad Religion
Static Age - Misfits. this was recorded in 78 I believe but wasn't properly released until 1997 or something like that. Walk Among Us came out in 82 and was their first proper album release so pick your poison.
Honorable mentions by Dead Boys, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Social Distortion, MDC. Ask me on a different day some of those would be top 5

Re: Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
Top 5 US proto-punk albums. Nothing recorded later than '75.
1. Raw Power - Iggy and the Stooges
2. New York Dolls - New York Dolls
3. Kick Out the Jams - MC5
4. White Light/White Heat - The Velvet Underground
5. The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers
Lots of other great 60s nuggets bands but I'll save those for a garage rock top 5.

I’m just gonna modify Marky’s and avoid nuggets bands as well. Also going to hold myself to one album per band.

2. New York Dolls - New York Dolls
3. Back in the USA - MC5
4. For the Whole World To See - Death
5. Dictators - Go Girl Crazy!
