I love Where Have All the Good Times Gone and Sorrow but in most cases prefer the originals.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

It's an album that even after all those listens it still holds a strange quality. My choices fluctuate more on this album than any other. Never disappoints.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑04 Nov 2021, 8:15am1. All Tomorrow's Parties

The worst I can say about it is that I don't care as much for the "prettier" songs anymore. It's not that they're bad or out of place, only that there's far more interesting sounds elsewhere on the record.Marky Dread wrote: ↑04 Nov 2021, 8:46amIt's an album that even after all those listens it still holds a strange quality. 5. Run Run Run
You could randomly shuffle the order of 2--5 and I'd be okay with it but ATP stays at the top - it's probably my favorite song from the 1960s.

Thing for me is how much of those "prettier" songs you can hear in the 80s indie pop acts like The Primitives (Name connection there) and The Darling Buds and then how much you hear those "noisier" sounds in the Jesus and Mary Chain and early Banshees etc.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑04 Nov 2021, 9:10amThe worst I can say about it is that I don't care as much for the "prettier" songs anymore. The album has those two main styles that influences post punk right across the board. Incredible really.

Re: Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
goddammit, i'd co-sign anyone's offered top 5 so far. it's such a brilliant album. Hmmmmm....
1. All Tomorrow's Parties
2. Heroin
3. European Son
4. Sunday Morning
5. Venus on Furs
I think like Doc, I mostly gravitate towards the "noisier" tracks (tho I included something from the other side in my top 5 as my heart feels torn by the album's tendencies) but I love all of them near equally.

Re: Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
So many bands get the hyperbolic treatment in terms of influence, but it really is undeniable how much was realize in so many cool bands of the 80s and beyond that we can hear on the first record. There's something satisfying in a "fuck you, Boomers" way that it was a commercial dud.Marky Dread wrote: ↑04 Nov 2021, 11:25amThing for me is how much of those "prettier" songs you can hear in the 80s indie pop acts like The Primitives (Name connection there) and The Darling Buds and then how much you hear those "noisier" sounds in the Jesus and Mary Chain and early Banshees etc.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑04 Nov 2021, 9:10amThe worst I can say about it is that I don't care as much for the "prettier" songs anymore. 1. Heroin - One of the five or six perfect songs in existence
2. I'm Waiting for the Main
3. Venus in Furs
4. Sunday Morning
5. Black Angel's Death Song
Nico's songs can GTFO though Tomorrow's Parties is the best of the bunch. Cale's influences are really what elevate the material for me and make the album so distinct, unique, and wonderful. Also, it took me awhile to appreciate Sunday Morning, but what really sells me on it is the first verse vocals being super dry and then the remaining verses/choruses just being drenched in reverb. Such a great touch. As is Cale's celesta playing.
*Femme Fatale also has a nice chorus.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Nice, we had the same, just 1 and 3 switched.
