Great idea for a list, although mine will be mostly totally predictable. Gonna do artists only, not groups, since that's the way the question was asked. And gonna try to stick to folks who are primarily associated with folk (so no Neil Young or Johnny Cash or whatever), or who built a strong folk repertoire before branching into other musical genres:

1. Bob Dylan (I mean, how could I not?)
2. Phil Ochs
3. Woody Guthrie
4. Joni Mitchell
5. Utah Phillips

Apologies to... a lot of great folkies and folk groups and crossover artists.

Re. Freddy Neil: I'm sure you have heard "Everybody'sTalking" or "Dolphins."

Re. Paul Clayton: he's a bit of a folk encyclopedia, he's done about every song imaginable. Lots of shanty/whaling stuff too. Co-wrote "Gotta Travel On" which Joe cities at the beginning of AT, "inspired" Dylan to write "Don't Think Twice."

Re. Eddi Reader: had a couple of hits with Fairground Attraction. I like her album of Robert Burns songs. She's also the sister of that Trashcan Sinatras guy.

I said folk artists so that's open to interpretation. I was thinking more the traditional guy/gal with guitar or banjo but I certainly have no problems with what people have put forward so far.

Yeah, I know, I just needed to create some boundaries for myself.

It helps because for instance Olaf listed the Pogues. I would have to do the same.

Hello,

Does anyone consider Against Me! (pre-New Wave) as punk-folk?

I thought for a very long time what folk meant to me, and I excluded traditional Celtic music, more something in the spirit of Woody Guthrie. I also excluded Dylan as transcending the label easily where Cash never sought to (and would have been for the worse if he had).
