New expanded Beach Boys comp. Disc 1 is original, 2 and 3 are the expansion. Sadly the Kokomo era gets no extra love.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

What a weird choice. This wasn't a single off the album and I love Carl/Al, but it's real bad. "It's Gettin' Late" is way more of a Carl banger from that shit album.

What's lamer, Kokomo or Be True To Your School? It has to be BTTYS, right? That is a Wonder Bread mayo sandwich and a glass of whole milk on the way to a Klan rally.

For sure. Kokomo has a banger chorus and a ripping lead from Carl. Mike sucks as always but it has positive attributes.

I hate School. Have to do a little more looking into it, but sounds like there are some new stereo mixes on this reissue so that'll probably sucker me into getting it somehow.

I don't know if I can do it. I'm always up for the copyright dump releases, but to keep buying new mixes...I don't know. Despite the shit packaging, the last round of reissues in 2012 was great. Having the mono mixes on CD and then the stereo extractions. The twofers also continue to hold up for the later material.

Agreed. "It's Gettin' Late" is a great late period track. Same with "Maybe I Don't Know".

I'm sure we've shared this a time or two but every once in a while I remember it exists and it is definitely worse than anything Mike Love has ever released:

I learned of it when a friend who is a massive BBs fan (he loathes Mike, to be clear) told me about it. My jaw dropped when I heard it. Aesthetically, it's stunningly awful, but I give him grudging credit for exploring hip hop at that time given his age and background. But it is awful.

I think Maj brought up the ultra lame trend at the time of starting a rap with "My name is..."

I wanted to give it a half hearted defense in comparison to "Summer of Love," but no, it's definitely worse. I wanted the sorta mash up thing to be better, particularly with the Dust Brothers involvement. Yeesh, they did this in 1990? After Paul's Boutique. Maybe this would get a pass in like 1985, but hip hop evolved a lot by then.

That's basically Heston's argument for KISS.

Heston mistakes total enlightenment for syphilis, so it's an understandable mix-up
