I caught a show last night. I'm not terribly familiar with their songs beyond Let It Be and that comp that came out in 06, but I had a good time. They cranked through the first 10 songs in about 20 minutes. It was fairly ramshackle and not too far removed from what I've seen/heard of their pre-reunion era (which isn't much) in spite of Westerberg's sobriety. It was funny that one of the few songs that they got through without lyrical flubs was Maybelline. Crowd was a bit older and not as energetic as I had hoped. The band had great energy and Tommy and Paul looked pretty cool.

Yeah...that's a typical throw-shit-against-the-wall 87 songs @ buck-fifty-nine each Mats setlist. Their stamina must be getting a lot better with > year of reunion touring under their belt, because the sets were a lot shorter last year.
Subdued crowds actually tend to bring out the pisstakes. It's like "Fuck it...if you're not into this, we're just going to have a live rehearsal and if that annoys you it's your problem."

The show was pretty great. "Better" probably than any Slim-era show I saw. Better than some of the Bob shows, not as great as some others. Not too much in the way of covers or horsing around, save I Want You Back as part of the encore, if that counts, and Paul hurling his SG across the stage to his guitar tech, who caught it. Nice acoustic encore from Paul comprised of Ghost on the Canvas and Skyway. Just basically a great rock and roll band playing great songs with spirit and loud. There was some childishness where Paul started I'll be You sitting on the stage floor, decided he didn't need to go through with it, but couldn't get the mic back to it's proper position for half the song. As if the audience gave more of a shit for a minor MTV hit than they did for the Tim songs, which they came alive for. A decent sized contingent in front was more into the early stuff. Very good drummer in Freese. Good guitarist in Minehan, though Paul's playing was more fun and expressive. He's really got the Keef thing happening.
