Are You Red..Y. Great live but "sea shanty disco" as Heston put it never really appealed to me. I think all the other songs are at least competent in a very baseline level.

I could see a lot of vote splits this round.

Fools! You'll all meet the liquidator one day. Anyway, I'm switching my vote to CUH this time so that I can have the privilege of rejecting as many CTC "songs" as possible.

This is where I admit I kind of like aspects of all of these songs.

I wonder how we would view CtC if it was made under any other name bar The Clash. Or by another band altogether.

We wouldn't. That is, if it were made by anyone else it either wouldn't have been released or would have sunk without a trace. That it was made by the Clash adds extra vinegar to the criticism, but it also means anyone even cares to analyze it.

Exactly it gets a bizarre pass because of the name on the cover. I'm not saying the songs were not any good as in a live setting they showed some promise. But the finished article is appalling.

I still find it a very listenable album, sure there's a higher ratio of stinkers on there than previous efforts but each time I listen to it, I come away more and more impressed and I keep forgetting it's not that bad. Don't get me wrong it doesn't come close to the first 4 albums (CR closer) but with brilliant tracks like TIE, TCT and NAS, not bad efforts of Dictator, MAS, AYR and even Fingerpoppin, it's actually not a bad album.

Relistened to the demos recently, they're not bad and reminded me a serviceable album was definitely achievable if the project hadn't been sabotaged. Something like this maybe:

This is England
Three Card Trick
Glue Zombie
Galleani
North and South
Cool Under Heat

Are You Ready
Out of Control
Ammunition
Sex Mad Roar
National Powder
Pouring Rain

Maybe it tried too hard to be a BAD album. ;)

Do you think your opinion of CTC varies depending on when you first got into The Clash?
It does seem that people’s view of their catalogue is different if they first got into The Clash via Combat Rock, London Calling or S/T etc..

Quite possibly true mate. But I also think that if you started with CtC then every other Clash song you heard after would've been a mind blowing bonus.

CtC was the first Clash album out whilst I was into them. Yes, it will probably colour my thoughts.
