Are we going backwards, or are we going forwards?Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑09 Apr 2019, 10:16amThis man fucking gets it!Marky Dread wrote: ↑08 Apr 2019, 9:06pmRudie is brilliant and like most here love it to bits. However it's a throw back sound to our brothers from the Windrush generation. London Calling sings of a foreboding future and of the shape of bad things to come it's was also the one great song to take the sound of punks fury forward. For it's originality alone it has to be my winner.

Would register my vote to keep LC if there was any point at this stage. Might as well go vote for Monster Raving Loony Party instead.

To borrow from Rowan Atkinson, I spurn those who voted out LC like I would spurn a rabid dog.

I'd regard LC as arguably the band's finest single achievement. It's just such a brutally powerful composition with everything - lyrics, beat, imagery - in total harmony and all the other bells and whistles (fantastic guitar solo, Joe's wolf whistles, ingenious SOS outro etc) just add immensely to it. What they produce off a single relentless driving beat never ceases to astound me the more i listen to it. Respect to Rudy, but it can't match that and nor can probably 80% of rock songs ever written imo.

I love London Calling and have talked at length on here before about my absolute adoration of the song, but RCF has this joie de vivre that I find impossible to vote against.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑09 Apr 2019, 11:07amTo borrow from Rowan Atkinson, I spurn those who voted out LC like I would spurn a rabid dog.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

The choice is between two excellent songs and challenges you which version of the Clash do you prefer: the optimistic pop side or the urgent critical side.Heston wrote: ↑09 Apr 2019, 12:04pmI love London Calling and have talked at length on here before about my absolute adoration of the song, but RCF has this joie de vivre that I find impossible to vote against.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑09 Apr 2019, 11:07amTo borrow from Rowan Atkinson, I spurn those who voted out LC like I would spurn a rabid dog.

Rudie is so brilliant — a slowed-down Bo Diddley jam that's sort-of-but-not-quite bluebeat. It really sounds like nothing else.

Here's a "spirited" off the cuff rendition...

Apart from slowed down Bo Diddley apparently.

The only time they actually sound like seagull cries to me are at about the 2:05 mark.
