I hate punk.

Did someone mention Wire.
Hey, I prefer postpunk to punk.
I know and The Clash were both.

I find the Clash as a tangential postpunk band. If a key quality of postpunk was a certain iciness, of removing the passion of rock n roll (and punk), the Clash don't fit that at all. They were pure rock n rock emotion and earnestness. But they did exhibit that other postpunk quality of “getting past” rock and infusing the form with new approaches. A tough call whether to include them as a proper post-punk band.

Rock n roll band all the way in image. Except they were not afraid to experiment. London Calling (song) has elements of post punk. I think The Clash just saw all music as fair game.

Right—and that openness, so to speak, makes them less postpunk than more generalist rock. Or at least difficult to categorize, unlike clear-cut post-punk bands like Joy Division, Magazine, or Wire.

Heretical opinion: the FHTE Complete Control is good but it’s not revelatory for me.

I voted GotW, but it felt terrible.

FHTE CC is the greatest piece of noise ever recorded. That bit at the end where Joe shouts "this is punk rockers" makes me do a sex wee in my trousers.

When I became a fan of The Clash in 1976 I never thought it would come to this.
