A few months ago, I was going down a rabbit hole hunting down obscure female punk and especially post-punk bands. Obscure chiefly because it's the male bands that dominate popular memory. But generally they were groups who put out a 7" or ep and that was it. A couple series of compilations stand out:

But what struck me is that there was so much more variety, less orthodoxy (especially punk orthodoxy) than in the big male-centred bands. Which is to say, female punk and punk-inspired bands seemed to capture the punk spirit of openness and diversity much, much better.
