As much as I wanted The Stranglers to win, didn't The Who win the previous head to head?
I presume somebody ignored Wally's final whistle.
They weren’t in the same qualifying poll.
There are always 2 qualifying polls and the top scorers in each pool go into the final. The number that goes into the final varies depending on the voting i.e. a runaway winner in each poll will go head to head but in the event of a close poll others will go into final vote.
There is no seeding to the qualifying polls so depending on your opinion some get stacked whilst others may only have one obvious pick. Sometimes those runaway poll winners don’t do well when they come up against the other poll.
I'm still unravelling my brain after reading that.

Do we know for certain that Wally isn't actually a North Korean apparatchik?

Sorry I missed your point.
No The Who did not beat The Stranglers in the previous 3 way head to head. If you check the comments when the poll was closed it was tied at 7 all between Who / Stranglers and The Replacements were on 6.
That is why it went to a further tie break to split the 2.
Someone added to The Who poll after the match was over.

Looks like the irony is with The Stranglers in this penalty shootout

I've said it before, there's always been a schism between the Yanks and the Stranglers. Yet they treat the Who as if they're one of their own. Similar with Led Zeppelin.

I'm pretty sure most of the Stranglers votes here are from Limeys.

I reject "Acid Queen" and "Go To the Mirror." No effin' way you think those are better than "Kids." I can accept the possibility of most of those (I'm skeptical of "Join Together" but fine), but no way on those two. But you have my respect for not having anything after Quadrophenia (tho you'd be well within rights to pick "Squeezebox").
