I will deflect Flex's first point about the intro. It was deliberately done like that to simulate the feeling of just walking into a club and the record is already playing. Not to mention the fabulous piano glissando at the start. Then they come in with not the chorus but the second half of the chorus. A totally nifty move because then it all resolves to the home key as the verse starts and you immediately feel the tension dissipate.

I'm not sure if you mean tension in some musical structure sense, but tension is not something I sense when listening to Dancing Queen. I will admit to not being much of an ABBA fan but I really don't get any tension, suspense, or any other emotion really - the song's about dancing and that's about it. Enlighten me.

I do just mean in a musical sense. The song doesn't start in its home key so you get that sense of contentment when it finally resolves to it.

Depends on whether the screaming of those being burned alive is predominantly female. And, of course, it has to appear on an album. The rules cover this, people!

Hes, I forgot to reply to your question awhile back, but wife thought I was crazy for siding with the Breeders. She also didn't really remember the song which was an instant boner killer for me. Her basic argument was that Dancing Queen is a legendary song and Cannonball isn't.

Relistened to both songs now. The main epiphany I had was that I remembered Cannonball but hadn't heard it in a very long time and totally forgot how fucking cool the song is. As noted earlier - big hooks, a screamy-distorted part, the rest that Flex mentioned, weird fun stuff - the "a-wooo" intro, aforementioned whistle, percussion, etc. the song is just so fucking cool. Dancing Queen has some unorthodox parts that I never really noticed - the intro we've been discussing recently, but the chord structure is also a lot more interesting than I had expected. The other main strength is the chorus melody rising to the "tamborine oh yeah" line which is just so so good. That being said, it's not enough for me, particularly given what I go for in a song.

Yeah I have to with what I like as that is the point of this exercise right?

The wife and I got drunk & high on Friday or Saturday night and she drummed as I played guitar on covers of both Paranoid (her singing) & Rudie Can't Fail (me singing). I know I'm usually quick to share my less than mediocre musical experiments, but these recording are gonna be lost on the tube, as it were.

Quite appropriately, yet accidentally, IMCT has decided that 2020 is the year of "Paranoid."
