The Ultimate Women's Album - Side 1 Track 3 Vote - Round 3

Post by Dr. Medulla »

And then there were two, separated by a single vote. Probably a good idea to make a case to try win over the five votes who hold the balance of power. Pick a winner or I'll pick one … and you don't want that to happen.

Honestly, I've decided to stick with Because the Night out of a sense of consistency, but I'm not particularly worried if it loses.

Seems anti-Hoy to vote against Bruce, but here I am.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

‘Who had a 1978 hit with Because The Night’ was a question on The Chase tonight!
I was quick with the answer.

Okay, I just had to listen to these two songs back-to-back to see which one stuck out the most. Because the Night wins.

I’m actually annoyed that Dancing Barefoot is a track two. I’d’ve argued vehemently for it if it were a track 3.

I'll try to make my case. First, I actually love both of these songs so it's hard for me to make a negative case against Patti Smith. The only thing I can say is there are a few Patti Smith tracks I prefer to this one (tho not too many) and I think Son of a Preacher Man just has a bit more frission and spark to it. While the Patti Smith tune is fine (more than fine really), I feel like her most transgressive work rests elsewhere in her catalog (and in other parts of this album, in fact). Son of a Preacher Man, with its wedding of Dusty's pop vocals to the real muscular r&b of American Sound Studios, with the Memphis Cats and the Sweet Inspirations providing instrumental and vocal backup, creates the finest specimen of what blue-eyed soul can be. You can also appreciate Jerry Wexler's great production job. The song sounds bottomless.

Like the last track we ended up picking, it's a standout highlight of its genre and trailblazing in its right.

Because The Night, it's a decent track and to be honest, the Dusty track doesn't do that much for me.

I couldn't think of a good reason to change my vote too, so I voted for Patti. Always loved Because The Night. Even though its not a PSG original, It sounds as if it was written by them. Even Mr Springsteen has said "It's Patti's song now"

This sums up how I feel. I adore the Patti Smith song but you just can't argue with that awesome Memphis Cats sound.

22 votes with 1 per person?
Best turn out yet but interesting poll though.

Plus we had only 20 votes for Round 2.
