My two faves from this one - Nina and Sleigh Bells - are in this heat. Nina's is obviously one of the titanic songs of black struggle, and hers is likely the definitive version, and Sleigh Bells is, imho, the spirit of where punk can be right now. Such, such great tracks.

Maybe sacrilege but I much prefer the Bob and Marcia version of Young, Gifted...
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

I do when I listen to it on the Trojan Ska album.
Funnily enough it is on the same side as Althea and Donna Uptown Top Ranking which caused a debate on the last round.

Wouldn't quibble over versions, Aretha does a mesmerising one too in her own inimitable style, but being honest I'm less mad about the backing track on Bob and Marcia and none give me goosebumps like Nina does during that third verse with her interaction with the backing vocalist.

I was initially disappointed Shoop didn't run away with this as it is clearly the best song. I've adjusted my expectations and now am happy if it doesn't get last place.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Just had a listen and I thought you didn't like long monotonous grooves that don't go anywhere?

I voted for Nina's because it is great, but I do have a soft spot for this really stripped down version where Cody Chesnutt's incredible voice is allowed to shine:

(the "there's a world waiting for you" line is probably my favorite)

The lyrics and delivery are so lively and fun, i'm okay that there is no dramatic breakdown/build up. Though there are a few times when it just drops to drums and vocals only and then drops back in for a nice subtle dramatic effect.

The only thing this board is less of punk board is a hip hop board.

That came out mangled but you know what I mean.
