Re: Beatles Survivor Poll - Please Please Me Side A
I think it’s a shame Boys has had such a poor showing. I’ve always viewed it as a mini statement of intent of the Beatles. I think it is almost the birth of pop music. There was no chin rubbing - are we blues enough, they liked a record and made their version of it. It was about teenage emotions in a basic simplistic form.
It took a black record and arranged it for a white guitar group and not in a Pat Boone way. It was inclusive and not elitist. Even by the fact they had the drummer singing rather than one of the front line showed how everyone could have a go and the experience was more important than the expertise.
Music should be about being lost in the moment rather than looking for immortality. Even the slight sexual ambiguity of keeping the gender was a subconscious part of inclusivity, girls will be boys, and boys will be girls long before Lola.

As solid an argument for "Boys" as you're going to find. But something has to be pushed and, well, Ringo.ArmagideonTim wrote: ↑12 Oct 2020, 3:45amI think it’s a shame Boys has had such a poor showing. Chains. Never cared for that song.

Boys kinda rocks. It's a shame there is such drummer jealousy on this board that it'll be the first to go. I've only heard Standing before, so I need some time with these.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Wait, you've never heard Please Please Me before?
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Ah, I didn't realize that was still side A. I had to have heard PPM before, but it's not ringing a bell.

Pity and jealousy are not interchangeable words.

I think the board hates bass more than drums.

Again, it's pity more than hate or jealousy. The latter two concepts might contain respect or a sense of equality.

Is there anything drum related that is obnoxious as bad bass slapping?

A drum solo that goes on longer than the time it takes to go take a piss and return?

The loudness of them. If the song hasn't started do not touch your fucking drums.

Both are amazing. Going to have to disagree.
