Maybe sacrilege but I think Rock and Roll Music is better than Chuck's.
Me too, because Lennon had a better rock n roll voice.
Yeah, they pushed the key of the song higher and Lennon fucking nails it.
Lennon so often gets noted for that kind of dreamy voice—think "Imagine" or "In My Life"—but he had a savage rock n roller's voice starting out. McCartney probably had greater range of emotion, but Lennon had that, I dunno, growl?
Lennon sounded dangerous in a way that Paul never could have. I've read that Lennon never liked his singing voice, which is interesting because in my opinion he had one of the best voices in rock history.

I’m gonna split the difference: Twist and Shout is both good and overrated.
Bah. That's the agreeableness of a base Canadian.
I just massively prefer the Isley Bothers.

Come to think of it, I almost always prefer the original to any Beatles cover, even when it’s a good cover.
The only cover that really is as good as the original for me is "Bad Boy". That really rocks.
I would argue that Money is better than the original.
Maybe on par.

Yeah, that kind of voice at the point of shredding when it's operating at its maximum range. Check that cover they did called Twist and Shout.
The last song recorded for Please Please Me. They needed one more and pulled this cover from their live set. Lennon, his voice ravaged by a really bad cold, figured he could give it 2 takes at most. They decamped to the canteen at Abbey Road for coffee (Lennon chose warm milk for his throat). They then went back into the studio and put this done in 1 take. They tried a 2nd, but his voice was gone. It's a very powerful performance that maybe (or so I've read) comes the closest to capturing their Cavern Club sound.
Bad move that as milk is not good for the vocal chords. Should've used rum.

I suppose I'm not surprised given that Lennon had a lot of demons, including deep self-doubt. I've interpreted his cheap shot at Paul in "How Do You Sleep?"—"The only thing you done was yesterday"—to also be a (perhaps unrealized) shot at himself.

flying lizards' cover of money demolishes all others imho. i literally can't hear another version of that song without the FL's version playing in my head over it.

Hell yes.

But in non-deconstructed versions, I prefer Barrett Strong. Not to say the Beatles version isn’t very good.

i basically haven't heard a bad version of the song (this is not an invitation to post shitty covers of money, fyi). really strong in whatever version basically.

Yeah it's a terrific song. I really like the Backbeat Band covers of those songs in the movie "Backbeat".

There are plenty of examples where a cover version becomes the standard in the popular mind—e.g., The Kingsmen's "Louie Louie"; Willie Nelson's "Always On My Mind"—but the FL version is such a radical deconstruction, yet, yeah, that has come to be the standard version for me, too.

I have to admit I can't stand the Afghan Whigs. My mate loves them and used to play them all the time. Did nothing for me whatsoever.

There a band I've always wanted to like, but have never gotten into. His solo work is better, especially The Twilight Singers.

The Clash tribute and their cover of Band of Gold are great.
