ROB, a poor cover of a song I'm not that fond of anyway.

I think it was Lester Bangs who said RoB was a punk song, telling all the classical composers to get fucked. I prefer the Chuck Berry version, but the Beatles' is pretty decent shakes.

At the risk of bringing in outside info I shouldn't be using to judge the song, whenever I want to listen to RoB I never, ever go for the Beatles version. Great song, okay-ish version, seems the weakest at this point to me.

As with T&S, it's Lennon's superior vocal to Chuck's that sells it for me.Silent Majority wrote: ↑18 Oct 2020, 3:13pmI think it was Lester Bangs who said RoB was a punk song, telling all the classical composers to get fucked. I love the way Chuck utilises the smooth Nat King Cole influence into his own passionate, aggressive vocals.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑18 Oct 2020, 3:21pmAs with T&S, it's Lennon's superior vocal to Chuck's that sells it for me.Silent Majority wrote: ↑18 Oct 2020, 3:13pmI think it was Lester Bangs who said RoB was a punk song, telling all the classical composers to get fucked. Okay, so I'm probably the biggest proponent of clap tracks out there, but the RoB cover has to be the WORST clap track I've ever heard.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I absolutely do not understand preferring Lennon’s voice on an R&B number to Chuck Berry, personally. Or really any actual R&B artist. But de gustibus etc. etc.
