Magical Mystery Tour - Side B - Round 1

Post by WestwayKid »

In case you didn't already catch on ;), we're using the US version and not the British EP. This means we have some heavy hitters on the 2nd side.

Penny Lane. It's weird to be that nostalgic at the age of 20 or whatever.

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead

"Penny Lane" to the end of time. Its sole virtue was being matched with SFF, which contrasted the perspectives of John and Paul. John looks at his childhood with a mix of confusion and horror, something to understand if only to be free of. Paul is ever wistful of the small happinesses, the smiles and kind details. John is relieved that he's no longer that vulnerable child (but fears that he's not actually free); Paul kind of wishes he still were. John sees history as a prison to escape, Paul as a garden to be cultivated. As a person and a historian, I'm with John.

Melody's too damn good on Penny Lane for it to go before a non-song like AYNIL. Penny Lane's also got a spookier vibe than people tend to remember, as though played by a music hall ghost on a pub piano.

AYNIL's chief virtue is in summarizing the essence of the Beatles' philosophy. The song itself is neither here nor there.

Penny Lane is absolutely brilliant, I really can't get my head around people voting for it this early. Absolute diamond of a melody.

*phew* I'd like to add the above to my own argument against "Penny Lane."

I voted “Love” first, but that one needs to go too, and would’ve voted both if I could.

Penny Lane has a great melody, unlike these. It should stay until 3rd in a just world.

I'd read about the slur in Rich Man but never heard it myself. Ive just read a thread on Steve Hoffman's board and most of the Beatles nerds are sceptical Lennon sang it. It seems to stem from an unsubstantiated story in a book by Ray Coleman.

Though I can believe it as the kind of thing Lennon would find funny.

Well, I've no belief in their philosophy, Horatio. Love means nothing unless tide to action, continued action.
