The ground is probably still feeling the reverberation of him hitting the deck there. He was never the most svelte of players.

Hello,

Peter felt he got a lot of grief for the game and felt very much like he let the side down. The criticism is a bit unfair - first goal was under him but not much to do about the others.

Peter felt he got a lot of grief for the game and felt very much like he let the side down. The criticism is a bit unfair - first goal was under him but not much to do about the others.
The goal he was blamed for took a slight deflection if you look closely. Should have done a bit better but not the howler it appears at first.

The backstory doesn’t help him. Didn’t know he was playing (didn’t have a bench back then either) until 1 hour before kick off as Banks had passed a fitness test that morning.
Bonetti hadn’t played at all during the tournament until that game.
