Happy birthday Neil!
You're a great friend and I'll always consider you something of a mentor or role model. Your ability to probe in discussions and challenge participants to think through their own views makes you an invaluable participant for elevating any conversation, and coupled with your long-standing, principled commitment to compassion and a humanistic worldview makes you an admirably optimistic and dare I say punk rock voice here on the boards and in my life.
You also root for the correct baseball team which is no small matter. Could it be that you've taught me to tolerate... perhaps even respect... Canadians? The answer is no. But I suppose there are always future birthdays for me to reevaluate.

Here's wishing the old grumpy R.E.M.-Steely Dan fan a very Sixpence None The RIcher birthday! May all your Swans wishes come true![/runs away very briskly]

All the very best Doc, sorry it's late.
I will listen to 8 seconds of SWANS in your honour.

There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Re: Happy Birthday Dr Medulla!
Thanks, folks! As has been properly observed by others in the past, friends are the family you choose, so it's a pretty significant decision we make over the course our lives. Thank you all for making the choice easy and so very, very satisfying. I take a helluva lot more from our conversations than I give—quantity notwithstanding—because you're all such dynamic, caring, funny, and insightful people. I'm a much better person for discovering you all.
