So first question : I dont deal much with installing windows anymore but Yeah, pretty sure you would still need a product key.
Alrighty. Shouldn't be hard to find a keygen app.
As for running VMs, Ive done it a lot and most computers from the past 10 years are quite capable of running VMs with little to no hit in performance.
In the end, tho, I wouldn't be using this machine much anyway, so I don't need to be able to switch back and forth on the fly. Installing a VM package seems like an extra step that isn't all that necessary. All a moot point, tho, if I don't locate a Windows install disc.
Also if the hardware in question will run under Ubuntu or other mature Linux distro you could go that route.

I realize the geek in me likes these more technical solutions because stuff like that is "fun" for me.
But if this book scanner I'm thinking about requires Windows, that wouldn't help me, no?
There might be a linux driver and software for it. Put the model number into google and cross your fingers. At worst, you lose a little time trying it out.
Putting a little stick about. Putting the frighteners on flash little twerps

For those curious about how the saga concluded, I obtained a copy of Win8.1, yet when I tried to install it, Boot Camp wouldn't recognize it. So fuck that. I decided to just get an iPod mount and use that as an overhead cam to do quick scanning.

Might have been a blessing. If those overhead scanners were crap, I'd have paid far more than I did for this mount. More irritating/confusing than anything. One of those things that started as a semi-neat idea then grew into a near obsession, and then no payoff. Whatever. Apple and Microsoft both suck.

Question for Zoom experts …

I'll preface by saying I may have figured it out, but I need to test it first and don't have people available till later today, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I have to record and upload my lectures delivered via Zoom. That's all fine. Here's the trickier part. While I'm yakking away, I want to be able to see all the students' cameras—all those little boxes—but I don't want them in the recording (unless they speak) out of privacy concerns. The way it is now, my recording has my screen shared Powerpoint going, plus boxes on the right hand side of me plus a few students (the ones who have their cameras on). So I want, in the recorded version, to lose those student cams but not during the actual session. I need gallery view on but not in the recording.

edit: Slightly related observation. I'm surprised by how few students turn their cameras on. I figured Generation Selfie would be, by default, into being seen. But I'd say 80% keep the camera off.

edit2: Discovered how to do that crap I was asking about above. You can only save with the active speaker in your shared screen when you first save the recording to the cloud, and then dl it from there. Seems odd that you don't have the option to save locally that way, but whatever.
